Dr. M. M. Salih

1913-1975

M.M Salih, born in 1913 in Bandar, Mangalore, was the son of Kunche Musa Haji from Manjeshwar. Despite being a successful businessman, his true passion was in literature, organization, and public speaking. He received his primary and secondary education from Kasaigalli School in Bandar and later completed his Intermediate Class at Government College, Mangalore.

Although he achieved success in the fish industry, MM Salih’s interest in homeopathic medicine grew over time. He dedicated himself to learning homeopathy alongside his business pursuits. After relocating from Bandar to Jeppu Morgangate, his reputation as a homeopathic practitioner soared, attracting patients from various religious and cultural backgrounds. MM Salih generously offered free treatment to all, regardless of their ability to pay.

MM Salih, despite his political affiliation with the Congress party, maintained a liberal approach to service, offering advice and cooperation to the public and various organizations regardless of the circumstances. He actively participated in numerous organizations, often holding positions such as secretary.

He served as a member of the Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee and held roles such as Secretary of the Badria Educational Institution in Mangalore, General Secretary of the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District Muslim Central Committee, and Secretary of the Crescent Welfare Center. Additionally, he served as the President of the Bolara Muhiyuddin Juma Masjid.

One of his notable achievements was serving as the first Chairman of the Dakshina Kannada District Wakf Advisory Committee from November 18, 1962, to February 11, 1967.

MM Salih was not only a prominent figure but also actively involved in various community initiatives. His membership in the Mangalore Peace Committee attests to his commitment to fostering harmony and resolving conflicts. In 1968, he played a crucial role in quelling communal riots in Mangalore, collaborating closely with the District Collector to restore peace.

Known for his linguistic skills, MM Salih had a strong command over multiple languages, including Beary, Tulu, Kannada, Malayalam, Urdu, and English. His proficiency as a speaker was well-recognized, and he often engaged in public discourse on various topics. Additionally, his passion for knowledge was evident through his extensive personal library, which housed thousands of books covering diverse subjects.

Following his passing on November 5, 1975, at the age of 62, his collection of books was generously donated to the Badria Education Institute in Mangalore.

He left behind his wife Mariyamma, five sons and two daughters.
