B. Muhammad (Yakshagana Artist)

Born on October 15, 1943, to Batte Zakri Beary and Khatijamma of the Jokatte Guthu family near Baikampadi, B. Muhammad Jokatte, known as the Bhishma of Yakshagana, was deeply involved in the cultural and social life of his community.
Though he completed his education up to PUC, Muhammad Jokatte’s true passion lay in Yakshagana, a traditional form of theater deeply rooted in the region’s culture. Over the span of 45 years, he dedicated himself to the art, becoming renowned for his portrayal of various characters, particularly Bhishma from the epic Mahabharata. His performances resonated with audiences far beyond the city limits, earning him widespread recognition, even in places like Mumbai.
Alongside his artistic pursuits, Muhammad Jokatte was actively engaged in community and political affairs. He served in various leadership roles, including as the President of the Yuvaka Mandal of Jokatte, President of the Jokatte Gram Panchayat, and as a member of the management committees of local mosques and educational institutions.
Despite his involvement in numerous activities, Muhammad Jokatte remained committed to his cultural roots and the preservation of Tulunad’s rich heritage. His contributions were acknowledged and honored by organizations such as the Kala Varga Pratishthan (R) of Mumbai and the Akhil Bharat Yakshagana Sahitya Conference.
Muhammad Jokatte’s legacy lives on through his wife, son, and two daughters, as well as through the memories of his impactful performances and dedicated service to his community. He passed away on August 13, 2020, leaving behind a lasting imprint on the cultural landscape of Dakshina Kannada district.
