1916 – 2023

A centenarian known as “Tha-Umma” from Kisan Nagar in Harekala village of Ullal taluk was credited with helping deliver more than a thousand babies. Born around 1916 to Hajabba Beary and Alimamma in Harekala, Atiqamma was affectionately called “Tha-Umma.” She married Hussainabba from Amblamogaru village, who worked as a boat transporter for bricks. They initially lived in a rented house in Harekala village before moving to Kisan Nagar after their home was washed away by floods.

Atikumma, or Tha-Umma, began her midwifery career at the age of 35. Her services were sought not only in Harekala but also in surrounding villages. Her daughter, Alimamma, recalls the days when Tha-Umma would walk 10-20 km to help deliver babies, as there were no buses at that time.

Tha-Umma was known for her kindness and generosity, especially towards children. She would always give something to eat to any child she saw, which earned her a special place in their hearts. Children would excitedly call out “Tha-Umma, Ta-Umma” when they saw her, eagerly seeking her attention. Over time, the villagers began calling Atiqamma “Tha-Umma,” and she embraced the name. She passed away on 25/09/2023 at the age of 107 years.

ಸಹಜ ಹೆರಿಗೆ ಮಾಡಿಸುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಖ್ಯಾತಿ ಪಡೆದಿದ್ದ ತಾಉಮ್ಮಾ ಹರೇಕಳ

ಉಳ್ಳಾಲ ತಾಲೂಕಿನ ಹರೇಕಳ ಗ್ರಾಮದ ಕಿಸಾನ್ ನಗರ ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿನ “ತಾಉಮ್ಮಾ” ಎಂದೇ ಗುರುತಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿದ್ದ ಶತಾಯುಷಿ ಸಾವಿರಕ್ಕೂ ಅಧಿಕ ಮಂದಿಯ ಸಹಜ ಹೆರಿಗೆ ಮಾಡಿಸಿದ ಕೀರ್ತಿ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದರು. ಹರೇಕಳ ಗ್ರಾಮದ ಕಲ್ಲಾಯಿ ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿನ ಹಾಜಬ್ಬ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ-ಅಲಿಮಮ್ಮ ದಂಪತಿಯ ಪುತ್ರಿಯಾಗಿ ಅಂದಾಜು 1916ರಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದ್ದ ಅತೀಜಮ್ಮ “ತಾ-ಉಮ್ಮಾ’ ಎಂದೇ ಚಿರಪರಿಚಿತರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಇಟ್ಟಿಗೆಗಾಗಿ ದೋಣಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಣ್ಣು ಸಾಗಾಟ ಮಾಡುವ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಅಂಬ್ಲಮೊಗರು ಗ್ರಾಮದ ಎಲ್ಯಾರ್‌ನ ಹುಸೈನಬ್ಬ ಅವರ ಜೊತೆ ಸಂಸಾರ ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದ್ದ ತಾಉಮ್ಮಾ ಅವರು ಹರೇಕಳ ಗ್ರಾಮದ ಮುದಲೆಮಾರು ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿ ಬಾಡಿಗೆ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸವಾಗಿದ್ದರು. 1974ರಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಭೀಕರ ಪ್ರವಾಹದಿಂದ ಮನೆ ಕಳಕೊಂಡ ಬಳಿಕ ಹರೇಕಳದ ಕಿಸಾನ್ ನಗರಕ್ಕೆ ಅವರು ಸ್ಥಳಾಂತರಗೊಂಡರು.
ತನ್ನ 35ನೆ ಹರೆಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೂಲಗಿತ್ತಿ ಸೇವೆಯನ್ನು ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದ್ದ ಅತೀಜಮ್ಮ ಯಾನೆ ತಾಉಮ್ಮಾ ಅವರನ್ನು ಹರೇಕಳ ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲ ಆಸುಪಾಸಿನ ಗ್ರಾಮದವರೂ ಕೂಡಾ ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಬಸ್ಸೇ ಇಲ್ಲದ ಆ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ 10-20 ಕಿ.ಮೀ. ವರೆಗೆ ನಡೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋದ ದಿನಗಳನ್ನು ತಾಉಮ್ಮಾರ ಮಗಳು ಅಲಿಮಮ್ಮ ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಯಾರು ಏನೇ ಕೇಳಿದರೂ ಅತೀಜಮ್ಮ ಇಲ್ಲ ಎಂದವರಲ್ಲ. ಅದರಲ್ಲೂ ಮಕ್ಕಳೆಂದರೆ ಅತೀಜಮ್ಮರಿಗೆ ಪಂಚಪ್ರಾಣ. ತನ್ನ ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಬಿದ್ದ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಏನಾದರೊಂದು ತಿನ್ನಲು ಕೊಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೂ ಅತೀಜಮ್ಮರಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಶೇಷ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಿತ್ತು. ಅತೀಜಮ್ಮರನ್ನು ಕಂಡ ಮಕ್ಕಳೆಲ್ಲಾ ನನಗೆ ಮೊದಲು, ನನಗೆ ಮೊದಲು ಎಂಬಂತೆ “ತಾ ಉಮ್ಮಾ ತಾ ಉಮ್ಮಾ (ಕೊಡಿ ಅಮ್ಮಾ… ಕೊಡಿ ಅಮ್ಮಾ)” ಎಂದು ಕೇಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರಂತೆ. ಮುಂದೆ ಅತೀಜಮ್ಮ ಅವರನ್ನು ಅವರ ಹೆಸರಿನ ಬದಲು “ತಾ ಉಮ್ಮಾ” ಎಂದು ಊರವರು ಕರೆಯತೊಡಗಿದರು. ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲ ಅತೀಜಮ್ಮ ಕೂಡ ಆ ಹೆಸರಿಗೆ ಒಗ್ಗಿಕೊಂಡರು ಎನ್ನಲಾಗಿದೆ.
