Yusuf Beary, affectionately known as “Isubu Beary,” left a lasting legacy in education and politics in Koyyur village of Belthangadi taluk. Often regarded as the “Akshara Saint of Koyyur,” he dedicated his life to the educational development of his village despite his own lack of formal schooling. Born on January 1, 1940, in Unnalu to Kodibettu Hamad Beary and Beepathumma, Yusuf Beary’s achievements over his 82 years of life are commendable and would make even the most educated proud.

Yusuf Beary played a pivotal role in the establishment of Government Junior Primary School Unnalu and Government High School Koyyur. He was also an influential figure in local politics, serving as a member of the Koyyur Mandal Panchayat and Koyyur Gram Panchayat, where he held the position of Vice President. Though he didn’t receive formal education, Yusuf Beary was known for his proficiency in mathematics. He contributed significantly as a member of the Koyyur Cooperative Bank, the Taluk Legal Advisory Committee, and the Taluk Public Awareness Committee.

In addition to his political and educational contributions, Yusuf Beary was involved in the religious life of his community. He worked tirelessly to support the construction and upkeep of the mosque in Koyyur and established a madrasa on his land to provide religious education to young children. His efforts also extended to the construction of the Erukadappu Masjid, where he served as the long-time president of the Jamaat. In the absence of the khatib, Yusuf Beary would deliver the Khutba himself.

A man of remarkable simplicity and humility, Yusuf Beary never borrowed money and avoided looking at his reflection, even while at the salon. His family recalls that he owned only two pairs of clothes, never ironed them, and never used perfume. His shroud was made from cloth he brought back after performing Hajj, which he had kept for 23 years.

Yusuf Beary passed away on the morning of May 31, 2022, at his home after drinking Zam Zam water. His last words indicated that he felt many people were coming that day. His wife, Hajumma Halimamma, passed away shortly after on September 3, 2023.

Yusuf Beary and Hajumma Halimamma had five sons and two daughters. All of their sons are active in various fields including politics, social work, education, and religion. Their eldest son, Haroon Bajila, served as a member and President of the Koyyur Gram Panchayat and was also the president of the Koyyur Masjid. Another son, Abdul Aziz Darimi Mudigere, served as the Khatib and Mudarris at Juma Masjid, Kallegah, and is currently the Imam of Chokkabettu Juma Masjid. Saifullah Khatib is another of Yusuf’s sons. The fourth son, Yakub Master, received the National Teacher Award in 2020. The youngest son, Ismail, is an advocate.

ಗ್ರಾಮೀಣ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆದಿದ್ದ ಯೂಸುಫ್ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಕೊಯ್ಯೂರು

ಬೆಳ್ತಂಗಡಿ ತಾಲೂಕಿನ ಕೊಯ್ಯೂರು ಎಂಬ ಗ್ರಾಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಲವು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಮತ್ತು ರಾಜಕೀಯದಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನದೇ ಆದ ಛಾಪು ಮೂಡಿಸಿದ್ದ ಯೂಸುಫ್ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಅವರು “ಇಸುಬು ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಅಂಗಡಿ” ಎಂದೇ ಪರಿಚಿತರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಕೊಯ್ಯೂರಿನ ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಗೆ ಶ್ರಮಿಸಿದ್ದ ಅವರನ್ನು ಕೊಯ್ಯೂರಿನ ಅಕ್ಷರ ಸಂತ ಎಂದರೂ ತಪ್ಪಿಲ್ಲ. ಕೊಯ್ಯೂರು ಗ್ರಾಮದ ಕೋಡಿಬೆಟ್ಟು ಹಾಮದ್ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ-ಬೀಪಾತುಮ್ಮ ದಂಪತಿಯ ಪುತ್ರನಾಗಿ 1940ರ ಜನವರಿ 1ರಂದು ಉಣ್ಣಾಲು ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿ ಯೂಸುಫ್ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಜನಿಸಿದರು. ಕಾರಣಾಂತರದಿಂದ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಶಾಲೆಯ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಪಡೆಯಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ 82 ವರ್ಷ ಪ್ರಾಯದ ತನ್ನ ಜೀವಿತಾವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಕ್ಷರಸ್ಥರು ಕೂಡ ನಾಚುವಂತಹ ಸಾಧನೆ ಯನ್ನು ಅವರು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರು.

ಸರಕಾರಿ ಕಿರಿಯ ಪ್ರಾಥಮಿಕ ಶಾಲೆ ಉಣ್ಣಾಲು, ಸರಕಾರಿ ಪ್ರೌಢಶಾಲೆ ಕೊಯ್ಯೂರು ವಿದ್ಯಾಕೇಂದ್ರಗಳ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಪಾತ್ರವನ್ನು ವಹಿಸಿದ್ದ ಯೂಸುಫ್ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಒಂದೊಮ್ಮೆ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲೂ ತಾಲೂಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಭಾವ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದ ರಾಜಕಾರಣಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಕೊಯ್ಯೂರು ಮಂಡಲ ಪಂಚಾಯತ್ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾಗಿ, ಕೊಯ್ಯೂರು ಗ್ರಾಮ ಪಂಚಾಯತ್ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಕೊಯ್ಯೂರು ಗ್ರಾಮ ಪಂಚಾಯತ್‌ನ ಉಪಾಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರೂ ಆಗಿದ್ದರು. ಮಗ್ಗಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದುವ ಅಥವಾ ಕಲಿಯುವ ಅವಕಾಶ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸಿಗದಿದ್ದರೂ ಕೂಡ ಅವರು ಗಣಿತದಲ್ಲಿ ನುರಿತರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಕೊಯ್ಯೂರು ಸಹಕಾರಿ ಬ್ಯಾಂಕ್‌ನ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾಗಿ, ತಾಲೂಕು ಕಾನೂನು ಸಲಹಾ ಸಮಿತಿಯ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾಗಿ, ತಾಲೂಕು ಜನ ಜಾಗೃತಿ ಸಮಿತಿಯ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾಗಿ ಯೂಸುಫ್ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಕಾರ್ಯನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಸಮುದಾಯದ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ರಂಗದಲ್ಲೂ ಅವರ ಪಾತ್ರ ಅಪಾರವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಕೊಯ್ಯೂರಿನ ಮಸೀದಿಯ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣ ಮತ್ತು ಏಳಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲೂ ಅವರು ಅವಿರತವಾಗಿ ಶ್ರಮಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಕಲಿಕೆಗಾಗಿ ಬಲುದೂರ ಕ್ರಮಿಸಬೇಕಾಗಿದ್ದ ಎಳೆಯ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗಾಗಿ ತನ್ನ ಜಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಣ್ಣ ಕೊಠಡಿಯೊಂದನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿ ತಾತ್ಕಾಲಿಕವಾಗಿ ಮದ್ರಸ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣದ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯನ್ನು ಕಲ್ಪಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಪರಿಸರವಾದಿಯಾಗಿಯೂ ಅವರು ಗುರುತಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿದ್ದರು.
ಏರುಕಡಪ್ಪು ಮಸೀದಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲು ಅವರು ಶ್ರಮಿಸಿದ್ದರಲ್ಲದೆ ಸುದೀರ್ಘ ಕಾಲ ಜಮಾಅತ್‌ನ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಅನಿವಾರ್ಯ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದ ಖತೀಬ್ ರಜೆ ಹಾಕಿದರೆ ನೇರವಾಗಿ ಮಿಂಬರ್ ಹತ್ತಿ ಕುತುಬಾ ಪಾರಾಯಣ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಒಮ್ಮೊಯೂ ಯಾರಿಂದಲೂ ಸಾಲ ಮಾಡದ ಯೂಸುಫ್ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ತನ್ನ ಮುಖವನ್ನು ಕೂಡ ಕನ್ನಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೋಡಲು ಹಿಂದೇಟು ಹಾಕುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಸೇಲೂನ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ತಲೆಗೂದಲು, ಗಡ್ಡವನ್ನು ತೆಗಿಸುವಾಗಲೂ ಅವರು ಕನ್ನಡಿ ನೋಡುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. “ಆಯಿತು ಹಾಜಿಯಾರರೇ…” ಎಂದು ಕ್ಷೌರಿಕ ಹೇಳಿದ ಬಳಿಕವೇ ಕಣ್ಣು ತೆರೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ತನ್ನ ಕೊನೆಯ ಉಸಿರೆಳೆಯುವವರೆಗೂ ಕೇವಲ 2 ಜೊತೆ ಬಟ್ಟೆಬರೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸರಳ ಜೀವಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಒಮ್ಮೆಯೂ ಬಟ್ಟೆಗೆ ಇಸ್ತ್ರಿ ಅಥವಾ ಸುಗಂಧ ಹಾಕಿದವರಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಅವರ ಕುಟುಂಬಸ್ಥರು ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ತಾನು ಹಜ್ ಕರ್ಮ ಮುಗಿಸಿ ಊರಿಗೆ ಮರಳುವಾಗ ಝಮ್ ಝಮ್ ನೀರನ್ನು ಚಿಮುಕಿಸಿ ತನ್ನ ಕಫನ್ ಬಟ್ಟೆಯನ್ನು ತಂದಿದ್ದರು. 23 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಅದನ್ನು ಜೋಪಾನವಾಗಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ಅದೇ ಬಟ್ಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಕಫನ್ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದು ವಿಶೇಷ. 2022ರ ಮೇ 31ರಂದು ಬೆಳಗ್ಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಮನೆಯ ಅಂಗಳದ ದ್ವಾರ ತೆರೆಯುತ್ತಲೇ “ಇಂದು ತುಂಬಾ ಜನ ಬರಲಿದ್ದಾರೆ” ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾ ಝಮ್ ಝಮ್ ನೀರನ್ನು ಸ್ವತಃ ತಾನೇ ಕೇಳಿ ಕುಡಿದು, ಖಲಿಮಾ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾ ಇಸುಬು ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಯಾನೆ ಯೂಸುಫ್ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಸ್ವಗೃಹದಲ್ಲೇ ನಿಧನರಾದರು. ಅವರ ಪತ್ನಿ ಹಾಜುಮ್ಮಾ ಹಲೀಮಮ್ಮ 2023ರ ಸೆಪ್ಟಂಬರ್ 3ರಂದು ನಿಧನರಾದರು.
ಯೂಸುಫ್ ಬ್ಯಾರಿಗೆ ಐವರು ಗಂಡು ಮತ್ತು ಇಬ್ಬರು ಹೆಣ್ಣುಮಕ್ಕಳಿದ್ದರು. ಐವರು ಪುತ್ರರು ಕೂಡ ರಾಜಕೀಯ, ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ, ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಗಳ ವಿವಿಧ ಸ್ತರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಹಿರಿಯ ಪುತ್ರ ಹಾರೂನ್ ಬಜಿಲ ಕೊಯ್ಯೂರು ಗ್ರಾಮ ಪಂಚಾಯತ್ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾಗಿ, ಒಂದು ಅವಧಿಗೆ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಕೊಯ್ಯೂರು ಮಸೀದಿಯ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರೂ ಆಗಿದ್ದರು. ಇನ್ನೋರ್ವ ಪುತ್ರ ಅಬ್ದುಲ್ ಅಝೀರ್ ದಾರಿಮಿ ಮೂಡಿಗೆರೆ, ಕಲ್ಲೇಗ ಜುಮಾ ಮಸೀದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಖತೀಬ್/ಮುದರ್ರಿಸ್ ಆಗಿದ್ದರು. ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ಚೊಕ್ಕಬೆಟ್ಟು ಜುಮಾ ಮಸೀದಿಯ ಇಮಾಮರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಮತ್ತೋರ್ವ ಪುತ್ರ ಸೈಫುಲ್ಲಾ ಖತೀಬ್ ಆಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ನಾಲ್ಕನೆ ಪುತ್ರ ಯಾಕೂಬ್ ಮಾಸ್ಟರ್ 2020ರ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕ ಪುರಸ್ಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಪಾತ್ರರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಕಿರಿಯ ಪುತ್ರ ಇಸ್ಮಾಯೀಲ್ ವಕೀಲರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
