Abbas Haji Kemmara

Abbas Haji Kemmara, hailed as the visionary behind modern Kemmara, was born in Athur but became synonymous with Kemmara, where he resided from 1958 until his passing. Born on January 1, 1934, to Iddinabba (Kunta Barry) and Aisha Umma, Abbas Haji’s lack of formal education belied his remarkable intellect, often leaving even educated individuals speechless.
Despite his humble beginnings, Abbas Haji accumulated vast agricultural land and established a timber industry. He served as the longstanding chairman of the Kemmara Muhiuddin Juma Masjid and held a position on the State Wakf Board during Ramakrishna Hegde’s tenure as Chief Minister.
A stalwart of the Muslim League, Abbas Haji contested the 1984 Vidhan Sabha elections from the Ullala constituency under the party’s banner. He was actively involved in various capacities within the Karnataka State Muslim League, including serving as president of the Puttur Taluk Committee. Additionally, he played a foundational role in establishing Uppinangady Junior College and served on its development committee.
Deeply engaged in religious and community affairs, Abbas Haji was esteemed as a member of Hirebandadi Gram and held positions such as Director of the Government Service Association and Founder Member of Kumbra Markazul Huda Mahila College. He also maintained close ties with senior Ulama-Umaras and served as the SDMC President of Kemmara Government School.
A dedicated philanthropist, Abbas Haji contributed significantly to various social, religious, sports, and political initiatives, earning accolades and awards from numerous organizations for his service.
On June 9, 2008, Abbas Haji Kemmara passed away, leaving behind a legacy and a family of twenty children from three wives.
