B.M. Hasan Haji Mangalore

B. Muhammad Hasan Haji, born on May 10, 1927, in Bolara, Mangalore, was the son of B. Muhiyuddin (Modin) Haji and Beefathima. He completed his intermediate education in Mangalore.

Growing up in a prosperous family and later settling in Kankanadi, Mangalore, Muhammad Hasan Haji naturally gravitated towards business. Through his success as a businessman and his leadership within the community, he accumulated a wealth of life experience. He was known for his devout adherence to religious practices.

He dedicated himself to the betterment of the socially, economically, and educationally disadvantaged, exhibiting fluency in Beary, Tulu, Kannada, and English, alongside possessing legal knowledge.

In 1940, he established a company called ‘Mohiuddin Haji and Sons,’ steadily advancing in the industry. By 1957, the firm undertook the substantial task of handling bulk iron ore shipments at the old Mangalore port. During the 1950s-60s, it notably stood out as the sole company managing bulk oil shipments from the old Mangalore port in an unprocessed form on open roads. Additionally, the company established itself as a leader in exporting cashew nuts and other commodities via ships.

The agency expanded its operations to include the handling of container ships at the new Mangalore port. In 1983, the firm underwent a name change to “Hasan Haji & Co.” With a legacy spanning nearly 80 years, Hasan Haji’s dedication has propelled this company to become one of the most renowned in the Mangalore shipping industry.

In 1998, it earned the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Shipping Exhibition Award for its exceptional handling of the largest volume of iron ore in a single day. Beyond New Delhi, the company has established its presence in key international hubs such as Dubai, China, Germany, USA, Hong Kong, Europe, the Gulf, and various African countries. Additionally, it maintains offices in Chennai, Kozhikode, and Mumbai.

He served as a Trustee of both the Mangalore Old Port and the New Mangalore Port Board. Additionally, he was a member of several advisory committees, including those for the District Canara Chambers of Commerce and Industries, the Karnataka State Port Board, and the Port Inland Development Board, which was formed under the leadership of the Karnataka State Chief Secretary.

Under his stewardship, the Mangalore Port experienced a period of prosperity, emerging as a pivotal hub for trade and commerce in both exports and imports. His outstanding service was recognized by both the central and state governments, leading to his appointment as a member of various boards.

He served as the President of the Badria Educational Institution in Mangalore and held the position of President of the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District Muslim Central Committee from 1994 to 1998. While he was not actively involved in politics, he was affiliated with the Congress party.

Known for his insightful speeches, he was regarded as a thoughtful thinker who articulated his ideas eloquently. He demonstrated a deep concern for society and the community, reflecting his commitment to their welfare. Additionally, he served as a member of the Mangalore Municipal Council.

He left behind his wife Khadijah, 7 sons and 4 daughters on 29 October 2004. His grandson Muhammad Amin was a partner of “Hasan Haji & Company” and also served as the President of Canara Chamber of Commerce and Industries.
