Dil Dallal Mammunhaka
1912 – 1957
Muhammad, affectionately known as Mammunhi, was born into affluence in 1912 as the son of Syed Ali from Manjeshwar in Kasaragod district. Renowned as a prominent trader in Bandar, Mangalore, Mammunhi conducted business ventures in various regions, including Lakshadweep, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), and Gulf countries. In Bandar, he operated a large warehouse for storing goods.
Despite completing his 10th standard education and having the opportunity to pursue a government job, Mammunhi’s passion lay in continuing his family’s business legacy. Possessing a strong command of the English language proved advantageous, enabling him to effectively engage with British government officials. Mammunhi frequently traveled to destinations like Lakshadweep and Sri Lanka for business, where he not only conducted transactions but also endeared himself to the locals by learning their languages.
Born and raised in Manjeshwar but conducting business in Mangalore, Muhammad, known as Mammunhi by many, hailed from Panambur. He married Beefatima from nearby Tannirbavi and settled in the same area. Despite his busy schedule, he made time to visit his Tannirbavi residence once a week.
Although initially called Mammunhi as a child, his business acumen earned him the moniker “Dildar Mammunhaka” among those who observed his dealings. With a fair complexion and a robust physique, Muhammad was a man of few words but spoke with great impact, often swaying others with his eloquence. Despite his weekly visits to Tannirbavi, he was constantly sought after for advice and assistance, particularly by those facing hardships. Muhammad prioritized education and served as the president of Bandar’s mosque.
Tragically, Muhammad passed away in 1957 at the young age of 45, leaving behind his wife, five sons, and five daughters.
