Dr. Abdul Khader Kasim (A.K. Kasim), who served as the Chief Medical Officer of Zahratul Qudai Asian Polyclinic Hospital in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, was not only a dedicated physician but also a passionate social worker. His sudden demise at the age of 51 due to a heart attack in Makkah deeply saddened his family, community, and Kannadigas, highlighting his significant impact in both medical and social spheres.

Born on July 9, 1969, in Kadur, A.K. Kasim was the son of Ahmed Ali and Zulaikha, originally from Kambar near Kumble, Kerala. He received his early education in Mangalore, attending Milagres School up to the 7th standard, and completed his PUC at Shree Sathya Sai Lok Seva Vidyasamsthe in Alika near Vitla. Pursuing his passion for medicine, he earned his MBBS degree from KMC, Mangalore, and further specialized with an emergency health course.

Named after his grandfather, Abdul Khader Kasim, who was fondly known as A.K. Kasim in the public eye. A.K Kasim carried forward his family’s legacy of community service and leadership. His father, Ahmed Ali, had a history of community involvement, serving as a Gram Panchayat member and engaging in agriculture in various locations like Chippad, Taltaje, Kadur, and Muguli near Karopadi in Bantwal taluk. Inspired by his father’s dedication, A.K. Kasim actively participated in social service throughout his life.

Dr. A.K. Kasim dedicated 26 years to providing medical services in Uppal, Mangalore, and Saudi Arabia, where he settled with his wife and two children after initially residing in Falnir, Mangalore. Known for his compassionate nature and community spirit, Dr. Kasim made significant contributions to society both locally and abroad.

In Mangalore, he was a respected member of the Mangalore M Friends Charitable Trust, where he organized initiatives to support the needy, including sponsoring wheelchairs for hundreds of disabled individuals irrespective of their background. Before relocating to Saudi Arabia, Dr. Kasim established a hospital in Kaikamba near Uppal, focusing on providing healthcare to underprivileged patients.

His impact extended beyond medical practice; Dr. Qasim actively participated in various Karunya projects in Dakshina Kannada district and played a pivotal role as the founder chairman of the Mangalpadi Urban Seva Cooperative Bank. Known for his modest and gentlemanly demeanor, he endeared himself to all who knew him.

During the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, while many chose to leave Saudi Arabia due to lockdowns, Dr. Kasim remained steadfast, continuing to treat patients and garnering attention for his unwavering dedication. His compassionate service extended to the Hajj season, where he was actively involved in caring for impoverished patients.

Dr. Kasim, renowned for his medical expertise and humanitarian spirit, had once rendered life-saving aid to a woman suffering a heart attack aboard a plane, an act that garnered widespread media attention and underscored his commitment to helping others.

On the evening before his passing, he spoke with his relatives in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, expressing plans to join them the following day, Friday. Concerned when he couldn’t reach anyone on Friday morning, they took decisive action and entered the house, only to discover his lifeless body near the kitchen.

The news of his sudden demise reverberated deeply among family, friends, and the community he served. After his body was placed for public viewing near the Zuhratul Kudai Asian Polyclinic Hospital in Makkah, where he had dedicated years to caring for patients, his final rites were solemnly conducted at the Haram.

ಅನಿವಾಸಿ ವೈದ್ಯ, ಸಮಾಜ ಸೇವಕ ಡಾ. ಎ.ಕೆ. ಖಾಸಿಮ್

ಸೌದಿ ಅರೇಬಿಯಾದ ಮಕ್ಕಾದ ಝಹ್ರತುಲ್ ಕುದಾಯಿ ಏಷಿಯನ್ ಪಾಲಿಕ್ಲಿನಿಕ್ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯ ಮುಖ್ಯ ವೈದ್ಯಾಧಿಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದ ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಫಳ್ನೀರ್ ನಿವಾಸಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದ ಡಾ. ಅಬ್ದುಲ್ ಖಾದರ್ ಖಾಸಿಮ್ (ಎ.ಕೆ. ಖಾಸಿಮ್) ಅನಿವಾಸಿ ವೈದ್ಯ ಎನ್ನುವುದಕ್ಕಿಂತಲೂ ಉತ್ತಮ ಸಮಾಜ ಸೇವಕ ಎನ್ನಬಹುದು.
ಕೇವಲ ತನ್ನ 51ರ ಹರೆಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಕ್ಕಾದ ತನ್ನ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೃದಯಾಘಾತದಿಂದ ಮೃತಪಟ್ಟಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಅತ್ಯಲ್ಪ ಜೀವಿತ ಅವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಕುಟುಂಬ, ತನ್ನ ಸಮುದಾಯ ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರು ಸದಾ ಮೆಚ್ಚುವಂತಹ ಸಮಾಜ ಸೇವೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಗುರುತಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು.

ಕೇರಳದ ಕುಂಬಳೆ ಸಮೀಪದ ಕಂಬಾರ್ ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿನ ಅಹ್ಮದ್ ಅಲಿ-ಝುಲೈಖಾ ಚಿಪ್ಪಾಡ್ ದಂಪತಿಯ ಪುತ್ರನಾಗಿ 1969ರ ಜುಲೈ 9ರಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಡೂರು ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದ ಎ.ಕೆ. ಖಾಸಿಮ್ ಅವರ ಪ್ರಾಥಮಿಕ ವಿದ್ಯಾಭ್ಯಾಸ ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಆಯಿತು. ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಮಿಲಾಗ್ರಿಸ್ ಶಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ 1ರಿಂದ 7ನೆ ತರಗತಿವರೆಗೆ ಕಲಿತ ಖಾಸಿಮ್ ಬಳಿಕ ವಿಟ್ಲ ಸಮೀಪದ ಅಳಿಕೆ ಶ್ರೀ ಸತ್ಯಸಾಯಿ ಲೋಕಸೇವಾ ವಿದ್ಯಾಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪಿಯುಸಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದರು. ಆ ನಂತರ ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಕೆಎಂಸಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಎಂಬಿಬಿಎಸ್ ವ್ಯಾಸಂಗ ಪೂರೈಸಿದ್ದರು. ಎಮರ್ಜೆನ್ಸಿ ಹೆಲ್ತ್ ಕೋರ್ಸ್ ಕೂಡ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರು. ಕಂಬಾರ್‌ನ ಅಬ್ದುಲ್ ಖಾದರ್ ಖಾಸಿಮ್ ಅವರ ಪುತ್ರನಾಗಿದ್ದ ಅಹ್ಮದ್ ಅಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಏಕೈಕ ಪುತ್ರನಿಗೆ ತನ್ನ ತಂದೆಯ ಹೆಸರನ್ನೇ ನಾಮಕರಣ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರು. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಅಬ್ದುಲ್ ಖಾದರ್ ಖಾಸಿಮ್ ಅವರು ಎ.ಕೆ. ಖಾಸಿಮ್ ಎಂಬುದಾಗಿ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ವಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿರಪರಿಚಿತರಾಗಿದ್ದರು.
ಕಂಬಾರ್‌ನಿಂದ ಪತ್ನಿಯ ತವರೂರು ಚಿಪ್ಪಾಡ್‌ಗೆ ಸ್ಥಳಾಂತರಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ಅಹ್ಮದ್ ಅಲಿ ಬಳಿಕ ತಾಳ್ತಜೆ ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಸ್ಥಳಾಂತರಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು. ತಾಳ್ತಜೆಯಿಂದ ಪೈವಳಿಕೆ ಸಮೀಪದ ಕಾಡೂರು ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಸ್ಥಳಾಂತರಗೊಂಡರು. ಇಲ್ಲೇ ಎ.ಕೆ. ಖಾಸಿಮ್ ಅವರ ಜನನವಾಯಿತು. ಬಳಿಕ ಬಂಟ್ವಾಳ ತಾಲೂಕಿನ ಕರೋಪಾಡಿ ಸಮೀಪದ ಮುಗುಳಿ ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಅಹ್ಮದ್ ಅಲಿ ಸ್ಥಳಾಂತರಗೊಂಡರು. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಕೃಷಿ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹಲವು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಗ್ರಾಮ ಪಂಚಾಯತ್ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾಗಿಯೂ ಅವರು ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಹೀಗೆ ತಂದೆಯ ಸ್ಫೂರ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಡಾ. ಅಬ್ದುಲ್ ಖಾದರ್ ಖಾಸಿಮ್ ಕೂಡ ಸಮಾಜ ಸೇವೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಕ್ರಿಯವಾಗಿ ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು.

ಸುಮಾರು 26 ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಂದ ಉಪ್ಪಳ, ಮಂಗಳೂರು, ಸೌದಿ ಅರೇಬಿಯಾದಲ್ಲಿ ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿ ಅಪಾರ ಜನ ಮನ್ನಣೆ ಗಳಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಫಳ್ನೀರ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಪತ್ನಿ, ಇಬ್ಬರು ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಸಹಿತ ಕುಟುಂಬದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಕೆಲಕಾಲ ವಾಸವಾಗಿದ್ದ ಡಾ.ಎ.ಕೆ. ಖಾಸಿಮ್ ಬಳಿಕ ಸೌದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆನಿಂತರು. ಸಂಘಟನಾತ್ಮಕವಾಗಿ ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ಖಾಸಿಮ್ ಮಂಗಳೂರು ಎಂ.ಫ್ರೆಂಡ್ಸ್ ಚಾರಿಟೇಬಲ್ ಟ್ರಸ್ಟ್‌ನ ಎನ್ನಾರೈ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಜಾತಿ, ಮತ ನೋಡದೆ ನೂರಾರು ವಿಕಲಾಂಗರಿಗೆ ಗಾಲಿಕುರ್ಚಿ ಪ್ರಾಯೋಜಿಸಿ ಸಂತ್ರಸ್ತರ ನೋವಿಗೆ ಸ್ಪಂದಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಸೌದಿ ಅರೇಬಿಯಾಕ್ಕೆ ಉದ್ಯೋಗಕ್ಕೆ ತೆರಳುವ ಮುನ್ನ ಉಪ್ಪಳ ಸಮೀಪದ ಕೈಕಂಬದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೊಸೈಟಿ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆ ತೆರೆದು ಬಡರೋಗಿಗಳ ಪಾಲಿಗೆ ನೆರವಾಗಿದ್ದರು.
ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯಲ್ಲೂ ಹಲವು ಕಾರುಣ್ಯ ಯೋಜನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಕ್ರಿಯರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಮಂಗಲ್ಪಾಡಿ ಅರ್ಬನ್ ಸೇವಾ ಸಹಕಾರಿ ಬ್ಯಾಂಕಿನ ಸ್ಥಾಪಕ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಡಾ. ಖಾಸಿಮ್ ಸರಳ ಸಜ್ಜನಿಕೆಯ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವ ಉಳ್ಳವರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಮಕ್ಕಾ ನಗರದಲ್ಲಿ ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ವೇಳೆ ಅನಿವಾಸಿ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರ ಪಾಲಿಗೆ ಆಪತ್ಬಾಂಧವರಾಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.
ಕೊರೋನ-ಲಾಕ್‌ಡೌನ್ ಸಂದರ್ಭ ಬಹುತೇಕ ಮಂದಿ ಸೌದಿ ತೊರೆದಿದ್ದರೆ, ಡಾ. ಖಾಸಿಮ್ ಅಲ್ಲೇ ಇದ್ದು ರೋಗಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ ನೀಡಿ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆದಿದ್ದರು. ಹಜ್ ಸಂದರ್ಭ ಬಡರೋಗಿಗಳ ಶುಶ್ರೂಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಕ್ರಿಯವಾಗಿ ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆದಿದ್ದರು.

ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಊರಿಗೆ ಬರುವ ವೇಳೆ ತಾನಿದ್ದ ವಿಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಹಿಳೆಗೆ ಹೃದಯಾಘಾತವಾದಾಗ ಅವರಿಗೆ ವಿಮಾನದಲ್ಲೇ ತುರ್ತು ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ ನೀಡಿ ಮಾನವೀಯತೆ ಮೆರೆದಿದ್ದರು. ಈ ವಿಚಾರ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾರೀ ಸುದ್ದಿಯಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಸೌದಿ ಅರೇಬಿಯಾದ ಕಾಲಮಾನ ರಾತ್ರಿ 11 ಗಂಟೆಗೆ ಜಿದ್ದಾದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಕರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಫೋನ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತನಾಡಿ ಮರುದಿನ ಶುಕ್ರವಾರ ಜುಮಾ ನಮಾರ್ಗೆ ಜಿದ್ದಾಕ್ಕೆ ಆಗಮಿಸುವ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ನೀಡಿದ್ದರು. ಆದರೆ ಶುಕ್ರವಾರ ಬೆಳಗ್ಗೆ ಎಷ್ಟೇ ಕರೆ ಮಾಡಿದರೂ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸದಿದ್ದಾಗ ಸಂಶಯಗೊಂಡು ಮನೆಯ ಬಾಗಿಲು ಮುರಿದು ಹೊಕ್ಕಾಗ ಡಾ. ಖಾಸಿಮ್ ಅವರ ದೇಹ ಮನೆಯ ಅಡುಗೆ ಕೋಣೆಯ ಬಳಿ ನಿಶ್ಚಲವಾಗಿ ಬಿದ್ದಿತ್ತು. ತಂದೆ, ತಾಯಿ, ಪತ್ನಿ ಮತ್ತು ಇಬ್ಬರು ಮಕ್ಕಳಾದ ಡಾ. ಕಾಮಿಲ್, ಡಾ. ಶಾಮಿಲ್‌ರನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು 2021ರ ಮಾರ್ಚ್ 21ರಂದು ಅವರು ಅಗಲಿದರು. ಮಕ್ಕಾದ ಝುಹ್ರತುಲ್ ಕುದಾಯಿ ಏಷಿಯನ್ ಪಾಲಿಕ್ಲಿನಿಕ್ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯ ಬಳಿ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕರ ವೀಕ್ಷಣೆಗೆ ಮೃತದೇಹವನ್ನಿಟ್ಟು ಬಳಿಕ ಹರಾಮ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂತ್ಯ ಕ್ರಿಯೆ ನಡೆಸಲಾಯಿತು.
