ಮಲೆನಾಡಿನ ಹಳ್ಳಿಯೊಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿ ಬೆಳೆದು ಇದೀಗ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಯಶಸ್ವಿ ಉದ್ಯಮಿಯಾಗಿ ಗುರುತಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿರುವ ಡಾ| ಬಿ. ಎಂ. ಉಮರ್ ಹಾಜಿಯವರ ಬದುಕು ಮತ್ತು ಸಮಾಜ ಸೇವೆ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಮಾದರಿ. ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸರಳ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವದ, ಮುಗ್ಧ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ಉಮರ್ ಹಾಜಿಯವರನ್ನು ಭೇಟಿಯಾದರೆ, ಮಾತನಾಡಿಸಿದರೆ ಅವರು ಇಷ್ಟೊಂದು ಶ್ರೀಮಂತ ಮತ್ತು ಧೀಮಂತ ಎಂದು ಯಾರೂ ಊಹಿಸಲಾರರು. ಇವರು ಮಾಡಿದ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವ ದಾನ ಧರ್ಮಗಳು, ನೀಡುತ್ತಿರುವ ದೇಣಿಗೆಗಳು ಅಪಾರ. ಇದಾವುದಕ್ಕೂ ಪ್ರಚಾರವನ್ನು ಬಯಸದ ಉಮರ್ ಹಾಜಿ ನಿಜಾರ್ಥದ ‘ಎಲೆ ಮರೆಯ ಕಾಯಿ’.

 

1966ರ ಫೆಬ್ರವರಿ 24ರಂದು ಶಿವಮೊಗ್ಗ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ತೀರ್ಥಹಳ್ಳಿ ತಾಲೂಕಿನ ಬಸವಾನಿ ಎಂಬ ಗ್ರಾಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದ ಉಮರ್ ಹಾಜಿ ಇಂದು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಎಂಬ ಮಾಯಾ ನಗರದ ಯಶಸ್ವಿ ಗುತ್ತಿಗೆದಾರರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಇವರ ತಂದೆ ಬಿ. ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಬ್ಯಾರಿಯವರು ಶಿವಮೊಗ್ಗ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಹೆಸರಾಂತ PWD ಕಂಟ್ರಾಕ್ಟರ್ ಆಗಿದ್ದರು. ಇವರ ತಾಯಿಯ ಹೆಸರು ಆಮಿನಾ ಬೀಬಿ.

ಪ್ರಾಥಮಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರೌಢ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣವನ್ನು ಬಸವಾನಿಯ ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಶಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪಡೆದು, ಶಿವಮೊಗ್ಗದ ಸಹ್ಯಾದ್ರಿ ಪಾಲಿಟೆಕ್ನಿಕ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿವಿಲ್ ಇಂಜಿನೀಯರಿಂಗ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಡಿಪ್ಲೊಮಾ ಮಾಡಿರುವ ಉಮರ್ ಹಾಜಿಯವರು ಅವರ ತಂದೆಯ ಪಾಳಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಪಳಗಿದವರು.

 

ಉಮರ್ ಹಾಜಿಯವರು ನೂರಾರು ಸಂಘ, ಸಂಸ್ಥೆ, ಸಂಘಟನೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಕ್ರಿಯವಾಗಿ ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದು ಅವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವು:

ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಬನ್ನೇರುಕಟ್ಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ತಂದೆ ಮತ್ತು ತಾಯಿಯ ಸ್ಮರಣಾರ್ಥ ಉಮರ್ ಹಾಜಿಯವರು ಅಂದಾಜು ಒಂದು ಕೋಟಿ ರೂಪಾಯಿ ವೆಚ್ಚದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದ ಯತೀಮ್ ಖಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಈಗ 400ಕ್ಕೂ ಅಧಿಕ ಅನಾಥ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಆಶ್ರಯ ಮತ್ತು ವಿದ್ಯಾಭ್ಯಾಸ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

 

ಉಮರ್ ಹಾಜಿಯವರು ಪ್ರತೀವರ್ಷ ಆರ್ಥಿಕವಾಗಿ ಹಿಂದುಳಿದ ಓರ್ವ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಆರಿಸಿ, ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ವೆಚ್ಚ ತಾವೇ ಭರಿಸಿ ಮಕ್ಕಾಕ್ಕೆ ಪವಿತ್ರ ಉಮ್ರಾಹ್ ನೆರವೇರಿಸಲು ಕಳುಹಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇದುವರೆಗೂ ಅಂತಹ 16 ಜನರನ್ನು ಉಮ್ರಾಹ್ ಯಾತ್ರೆಗೆ ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದ್ದು ಇದೀಗ 17ನೇ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಉಮ್ರಾಹ್ ಯಾತ್ರೆಗೆ ಸಿದ್ದವಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

 

SSF ಸಂಘಟನೆಯವರಿಗೆ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಎಲ್ಲೂ ಸ್ವಂತ ಕಟ್ಟಡ ಇಲ್ಲದ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಉಡುಪಿ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಕಾಪುವಿನ ಸಮೀಪದ ಮಜೂರು ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂದಾಜು 28 ಲಕ್ಷ ರೂಪಾಯಿ ವೆಚ್ಚದ ಸುಂದರವಾದ ಕಟ್ಟಡ ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅದನ್ನು ಅವರು ಸಭಾಂಗಣ, ಆಫೀಸು ಇತ್ಯಾದಿಗಾಗಿ ಬಳಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

 

ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಬಡಾವಣೆಯ ಹತ್ತಿರ, ಬನ್ನೇರುಘಟ್ಟ ರಸ್ತೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಕಾಲೇನ ಅಗ್ರಹಾರ ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರದೇಶವಿದ್ದು ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನವರು ಹಿಂದುಳಿದ ಪಂಗಡದ ಬಡವರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರಿಗಾಗಿ ಅಂದಾಜು 18 ಲಕ್ಷ ರೂಪಾಯಿ ವೆಚ್ಚದ ಒಂದು ಕುಡಿಯುವ ನೀರು ಸಂಸ್ಕರಣ ಘಟಕವನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

 

ಮಲೆನಾಡು ಮತ್ತು ಕರಾವಳಿ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕ ಮಸೀದಿ, ಮದ್ರಸಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಕಮ್ಮರಡಿ, ಕಡ್ತೂರು, ಬೇಗಾರೆ ಸಹಿತ ಅನೇಕ ಕಡೆ ಮಸೀದಿ ಮದ್ರಸ ‌ನಿರ್ಮಾಣಕ್ಕೆ ಆರ್ಥಿಕ ಕೊಡುಗೆಗಳನ್ನು ನೀಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

 

ಹುಟ್ಟೂರು ಬಸವಾನಿ ಎಂದರೆ ಇವರಿಗೆ ಬಹಳ ಪ್ರೀತಿ. ಬಸವಾನಿಯಿಂದ ಯಾರೇ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿಗೆ ಬಂದರೂ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಆತ್ಮೀಯವಾಗಿ ಸತ್ಕರಿಸುವ ಇವರೆಂದರೆ ಊರವರಿಗೂ ಬಹಳ ಅಭಿಮಾನ.

 

ಇವರ ಪತ್ನಿ ಝರೀನಾ ಉಮರ್. ಇವರು ಕಮ್ಮರಡಿಯ ಪ್ರಖ್ಯಾತ PWD ಕಂಟ್ರಾಕ್ಟರ್ ಇಬ್ರಾಹೀಮ್‌ರವರ ಪುತ್ರಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಟಿತ ‘ಕುಕ್ಕಾಡಿ’ ಕುಟುಂಬದವರು.

 

ಇವರಿಗೆ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಮಕ್ಕಳು. ಒಂದು ಗಂಡು – ಒಂದು ಹೆಣ್ಣು. ಪುತ್ರ ಅಶ್ರದ್ ಅಯ್ಯೂಬ್, ಆರ್ಕಿಟೆಕ್ಟ್ ಮತ್ತು ಸಿವಿಲ್ ಇಂಜಿನೀಯರ್. ಸೊಸೆ ಹುಸ್ನಾ ಬದರ್ ಕೂಡಾ ಆರ್ಕಿಟೆಕ್ಟ್ ಮತ್ತು ಸಿವಿಲ್ ಇಂಜಿನೀಯರ್. ಇಬ್ಬರೂ ಉಮರ್ ಹಾಜಿಯವರ ಕಂಪನಿಯಲ್ಲೆ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಯುತ ಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

Dr. B. M. Umar Haji

A Wealthy Yet Humble Personality,
Like a Hidden Fruit Beneath Leaves

 

Born and raised in a small village of Malnad, and today recognized as a successful entrepreneur in Bengaluru, the life and social service of Dr. B. M. Umar Haji stand as an inspiring model to all. With a simple personality and a modest heart, no one would easily assume, upon meeting or speaking with him, that he is such a prosperous and influential individual. His philanthropy and generous contributions are immense, yet he never seeks publicity for them. In every sense, Umar Haji truly represents the saying “like a fruit hidden beneath leaves.”

Dr. Umar Haji was born on 24 February 1966 in Basavani village of Tirthahalli Taluk, Shivamogga District. Today, he is a prominent and successful contractor, builder and developer in the bustling city of Bengaluru. His father, B. Mohammed Beary, was a renowned PWD contractor in Shivamogga District, and his mother’s name is Amina Bibi.

After completing his primary and secondary education at the government school in Basavani, he pursued a Diploma in Civil Engineering at Sahyadri Polytechnic, Shivamogga. Following in the footsteps of his father, Umar Haji honed his skills in the contracting profession.

He has been actively associated with numerous organizations, a few of which include:

• Vice President, Bearys Welfare Association, Bengaluru
• Vice President, Karnataka Muslim Jamaath
• Vice President, All India Human Rights
• Honorary President, Mangalore Muslim Youth Council, Bengaluru
• Honorary President, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike Swabhimani Banu
• Office Bearer, Nobo Nagar Site Owners and Residents Association, Bengaluru

With more than 250 awards, honors, and felicitations to his credit, Dr. Umar Haji’s exceptional service to society has been recognized internationally as well. The former Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, now Governor, honored him with the prestigious Icon Award. He has also been conferred with an Honorary Doctorate. Various associations across Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, and other Gulf countries have invited, felicitated, and honored him.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Umar Haji distributed over 5,000 ration kits free of cost across Bengaluru and various parts of Karnataka, a gesture that highlighted his magnanimity.

As the Chairman of the reputed Abhiman Group of Companies, he considers social service his life’s mission. He has built homes for all his employees, ensuring their security and dignity. At his son’s wedding, held at the grand Palace Grounds, Bengaluru, he sponsored the weddings of 21 all casts and religion economically backward couples, bearing the entire cost himself. Additionally, each couple was gifted essential household items such as beds, wardrobes, utensils, and other necessities.

In memory of his father and mother, Umar Haji has built an orphanage at Bannerughatta, Bangalore, at an estimated cost of one crore rupees. Today, more than 400 orphan children are receiving shelter and education there.

Every year, Umar Haji selects one economically disadvantaged person and, bearing the entire expense himself, sends them to perform the holy Umrah in Makkah. So far, he has sent 16 such individuals for the Umrah pilgrimage, and now the 17th person is ready to embark on the journey.

At a time when the SSF organization did not have its own building anywhere in the state, he constructed a beautiful building worth approximately ₹28 lakhs at Majoor near Kaup in Udupi district. The organization is now using it for meetings, office purposes, and other activities.

Near his residential area in Bengaluru, there is a locality called Kalena Agrahara in Bannerugatta road, where most of the residents belong to economically weaker and backward communities. For their benefit, he established a drinking water purification plant at an estimated cost of ₹18 lakhs.

He has contributed to the construction of many mosques and madrasas in the Malenadu and coastal districts. He has also made financial contributions for the construction of mosques and madrasas in several places, including Kammaradi, Kadthoor and Begaru etc.

Though deeply rooted in Bengaluru, his affection for his native village Basavani remains unwavering. He warmly welcomes and hosts anyone from his hometown who visits Bengaluru, earning their deep admiration and respect.

His wife, Zarina Umar, hails from the distinguished Kukkadi family, being the daughter of Ibrahim, a well-known PWD contractor from Kammaradi.

They are blessed with two children, a son and a daughter:

Son: Ashrad Ayoob – an Architect and Civil Engineer, married to Husna Badr, also an Architect and Civil Engineer. Both serve in responsible positions within Dr. Umar Haji’s company.

Daughter: Dr. Arshiya B. U., married to Dr. Mohammed Javid. Both are pursuing their Postgraduate degrees in Medicine.

Living by the principle “What is given is truly yours; what is hoarded belongs to others”, Dr. Umar Haji embodies a rare personality whose life and values serve as an inspiration to society.
