Haji Hameed Kandak

Hameed Kandak, popularly known as “Kandak Haji,” was born on January 10, 1943, in Bandar Kandak, Mangalore, to U.K. Ahmad and Zulekha. He held numerous leadership positions throughout his life, demonstrating his commitment to serving the community.
As President of the Mangalore Anjuman Khadimeen Muslim Association and Vice President of the Muslim Central Committee, he played key roles in promoting the welfare of Muslims in the region. Additionally, he served as President of the Karnataka Muslim Parishad and Vice President of Ahinda Janachaluvali, showcasing his dedication to social justice and inclusivity.
His involvement extended to various religious and cultural organizations, including serving as a Trustee of Pumpwell Mastida and participating in the All India Bari Parishad and Kendra Bari Sahitya Parishad.
In the realm of education, he contributed as Chairman of the Mangalore Gujarati Mahajan Teacher-Guardian Development Committee and the Mangalore Sant Joseph Teacher-Guardian Development Committee. He was also active in Madrasa management and served as a member of the State Haj Committee.
Beyond community and religious affairs, Kandak Haji was engaged in political activities, serving as a leader in the Rajya Janata Dal and holding positions in the DK District Congress. He was also involved in various committees related to human rights, defense, and peace.
Abdul Hameed, a multifaceted individual, was deeply involved in social, religious, political, and organizational activities, alongside his editorial contributions to various newspapers, including serving as the editor of a popular Kannada weekly. His dedication extended to organizing Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages, having completed over 25 such journeys.
Tragically, he passed away from a heart attack during a program organized by the “Ahinda” organization of Mangalore on January 24, 2018. Even in his final moments, his concerns remained focused on society and community. Abdul Hameed is survived by his wife, five sons, and a daughter.
