Jokatte Muhammad Haji, born on June 22, 1949, to MK Maya alias Mayabba Beary and Aishamma in Jottabettu, Jokatte, was a distinguished figure who transformed the 62nd village of Tokur, Jokatte. Despite being a Class 1 PWD contractor, he devoted his life not just to business and family but also to religious and political spheres, leaving a lasting impact on his community.

Muhammad Haji completed his education up to PUC II, a notable achievement during a time when technology was underdeveloped and typewriting was a rare skill. He studied from 1st to 7th grade at Kalawar Government School near Bajpe, continued his 8th to 10th grades at Bajpe Saint Joseph Higher Secondary School, and then completed his PUC. After his education, Muhammad Haji embarked on a career as a PWD contractor, a profession he excelled in for nearly 50 years. He managed construction projects across Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Hassan, Shimoga, Chikkamagaluru, and many other districts, earning commendations from public representatives and officials for his timely and quality work. His efforts also included utilizing CSR funds from the government and large companies for the development of Jokatte.

In addition to his professional achievements, Muhammad Haji was deeply involved in religious and political activities and was known locally as “JM”. He started his political journey with the Chikkamagaluru District Congress and held various significant positions including Surathkal Block Congress Vice President, Dakshina Kannada District Congress Vice President, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee Member, and Dakshina Kannada District KDP Committee Member.

In the religious domain, Muhammad Haji played a pivotal role in the reconstruction of the Jokatte New Masjid and served as its President for about 23 years. He also served as the Chairman of the Suratkal Zone 16 Masjid-Jamaat Committee and as a member of the Dakshina Kannada District Waqf Advisory Committee. His commitment to community service was further reflected in his roles as President of the Jokatte Yuvaka Mandal, Founding President of Anjuman English Medium School, President of Anjuman Khuvwatul Islam, and as an active participant in the development committees of Jokatte Primary and High School and Bajpe St. Joseph’s College.

Muhammad Haji was particularly passionate about education. He personally contributed to the early development of Anjuman English Medium School by bringing a chair and desk from his home to support the school’s progress.

Jokatte Muhammad Haji passed away at his home on the night of February 26, 2021. He is survived by his wife, three sons, and one daughter. His last rites were conducted at the premises of Muhiuddin New Juma Masjid, Jokatte.

ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ-ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಕ್ರಿಯರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಜೋಕಟ್ಟೆ ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಹಾಜಿ

ವೃತ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ಲಾಸ್ 1 ಪಿಡಬ್ಲ್ಯುಡಿ ಗುತ್ತಿಗೆದಾರರಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಕೂಡ ವ್ಯವಹಾರ-ಕುಟುಂಬಕ್ಕೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ತನ್ನ ಬದುಕನ್ನು ಮೀಸಲಿಡದೆ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನದೇ ಆದ ಛಾಪು ಮೂಡಿಸುತ್ತಲೇ 62ನೆ ತೋಕೂರು ಗ್ರಾಮದ ಜೋಕಟ್ಟೆ ಎಂಬ ಊರಿನ ಚಿತ್ರಣ ಬದಲಿಸಿದ್ದ ಕೆಲವೇ ಕೆಲವು ಪ್ರಮುಖರ ಪೈಕಿ ಜೋಕಟ್ಟೆ ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಹಾಜಿ ಕೂಡ ಒಬ್ಬರು.

ಜೋಕಟ್ಟೆಯ ಜೊತ್ತಬೆಟ್ಟು ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿನ ಎಂ.ಕೆ. ಮಾಯ ಯಾನೆ ಮಾಯಬ್ಬ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ-ಆಯಿಶಮ್ಮ ದಂಪತಿಯ ಪುತ್ರನಾಗಿ 1949ರ ಜೂನ್ 22ರಂದು ಜನಿಸಿದ ಜೋಕಟ್ಟೆ ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಹಾಜಿ ದ್ವಿತೀಯ ಪಿಯುಸಿ ಕಲಿತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಆಗಿನ್ನೂ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನ ಬೆಳೆದಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆಗಿನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣದ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಟೈಪ್‌ರೈಟಿಂಗ್ ಕಲಿಯುವುದು ವಿರಳ. ಆದರೆ ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಹಾಜಿ ಟೈಪ್‌ರೈಟಿಂಗ್ ಕೂಡ ಕಲಿತಿದ್ದರು. ಬಜ್ಪೆ ಸಮೀಪದ ಕಳವಾರಿನ ಸರಕಾರಿ ಶಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ 1ರಿಂದ 7ನೆ ತರಗತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಬಜ್ಪೆ ಸಂತ ಜೋಸೆಫ್ ಹೈಯರ್ ಸೆಕೆಂಡರಿ ಸ್ಕೂಲ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ 8ರಿಂದ 10ನೆ ತರಗತಿ ಕಲಿತ ಜೆ. ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಬಳಿಕ ಪಿಯುಸಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದರು. ಆ ಬಳಿಕ ಪಿಡಬ್ಲ್ಯುಡಿ ಗುತ್ತಿಗೆ ವಹಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳತೊಡಗಿದ ಜೆ. ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಸುಮಾರು 50 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಆ ವೃತ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರು. ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯಲ್ಲದೆ ಉಡುಪಿ, ಉತ್ತರ ಕನ್ನಡ, ಹಾಸನ, ಶಿವಮೊಗ್ಗ, ಚಿಕ್ಕಮಗಳೂರು ಹೀಗೆ ನಾನಾ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಗಳ ನೂರಾರು ಕಡೆ ರಸ್ತೆ, ಸೇತುವೆ ಇತ್ಯಾದಿ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣದ ಗುತ್ತಿಗೆ ವಹಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಸಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಮಗಾರಿ ಪೂರೈಸಿ ಜನಪ್ರತಿನಿಧಿಗಳು, ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳ ಪ್ರಶಂಶೆಗೆ ಪಾತ್ರರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಈ ಮಧ್ಯೆ ಸರಕಾರದ ಮತ್ತು ಬೃಹತ್ ಕಂಪೆನಿಗಳ ಸಿಎಸ್‌ಆರ್ ನಿಧಿಯನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿ ವಿವಿಧ ಯೋಜನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಜೋಕಟ್ಟೆಯಲ್ಲೂ ಅನುಷ್ಠಾನಗೊಳಿಸುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಜೋಕಟ್ಟೆಯ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಗೂ ಕಾರಣಕರ್ತರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ, ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಕ್ರಿಯರಾಗಿದ್ದರಲ್ಲದೆ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯವಾಗಿ “ಜೆಎಂ” ಎಂದೇ ಖ್ಯಾತರಾಗಿದ್ದರು.
ಚಿಕ್ಕಮಗಳೂರು ಜಿಲ್ಲಾ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ ಮೂಲಕ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಜೀವನ ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದ್ದ ಜೋಕಟ್ಟೆ ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಸುರತ್ಕಲ್
ಬ್ಲಾಕ್ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ ಉಪಾಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ, ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲಾ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ ಉಪಾಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ, ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಪ್ರದೇಶ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ ಸಮಿತಿಯ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾಗಿ, ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲಾ ಕೆಡಿಪಿ ಸಮಿತಿಯ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾಗಿ ಕಾರ್ಯನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಿದ್ದರು.
ಜೋಕಟ್ಟೆ ವಲಯ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ ಪಕ್ಷದ ನಿರ್ಣಾಯಕ ಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಜೋಕಟ್ಟೆ ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಹಾಜಿ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ-ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಕ್ರಿಯರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಜೋಕಟ್ಟೆ ಹೊಸ ಮಸೀದಿಯ ಪುನಃನಿರ್ಮಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಪಾತ್ರ ವಹಿಸಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಸುಮಾರು 23 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಈ ಮಸೀದಿಯ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ ಕಾರ್ಯನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಿದ್ದರು.
ಸುರತ್ಕಲ್ ವಲಯದ 16 ಮಸೀದಿ-ಜಮಾಅತ್ ಸಮಿತಿಯ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ, ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲಾ ವಕ್ಫ್ ಸಲಹಾ ಸಮಿತಿಯ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾಗಿ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯ ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಜೋಕಟ್ಟೆ ಯುವಕ ಮಂಡಲದ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ, ಅಂಜುಮನ್ ಆಂಗ್ಲ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮ ಶಾಲೆಯ ಸ್ಥಾಪಕ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ, ಅಂಜುಮನ್ ಖುವ್ವತುಲ್ ಇಸ್ಲಾಮ್‌ನ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ, ಜೋಕಟ್ಟೆಯ ಪ್ರಾಥಮಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರೌಢಶಾಲೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಬಜ್ಪೆ ಸೈಂಟ್ ಜೋಸೆಫ್ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಸಮಿತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪದಾಧಿಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿ ಜನಾನುರಾಗಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರು.
ಶಿಕ್ಷಣದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅಪಾರ ಕಾಳಜಿ ವಹಿಸಿದ್ದ ಜೋಕಟ್ಟೆ ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಹಾಜಿ ಅಂಜುಮನ್ ಆಂಗ್ಲಮಾಧ್ಯಮ ಶಾಲೆಯ ಆರಂಭದ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಮನೆಯಿಂದಲೇ ಕುರ್ಚಿ, ಮೇಜು ಕೊಂಡೊಯ್ದು ಶಾಲೆಯ ಮುನ್ನಡೆಗೆ ನಾಂದಿ ಹಾಡಿದ್ದರು.
ಪತ್ನಿ, ಮೂವರು ಪುತ್ರರು ಮತ್ತು ಒಬ್ಬ ಪುತ್ರಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಂಸಾರ ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಜೋಕಟ್ಟೆ ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಹಾಜಿ 2021ರ ಫೆಬ್ರವರಿ 26ರಂದು ರಾತ್ರಿ ಸ್ವಗೃಹದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಧನರಾದರು. ಅವರ ಅಂತ್ಯಕ್ರಿಯೆಯನ್ನು ಜೋಕಟ್ಟೆಯ ಮುಹಿಯುದ್ದೀನ್ ಹೊಸ ಜುಮಾ ಮಸ್ಜಿದ್‌ನ ವಠಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆರವೇರಿಸಲಾಯಿತು.
