1916 – 1998

Kamal Haider was born in 1916 into a Beary family in Mangalore. He pursued a career in journalism, and although he left India in 1946 at the age of 30, he maintained his identity as a true Kannadiga through his correspondence with fellow Kannada speakers.

Haider showed his talent as a Kannada journalist from a young age, becoming the managing editor of the magazine “Antaranga” at just 18. In 1935, he also served as the editor of the “Jyoti” newspaper, which was launched in Manjeshwar. As a columnist, he had a strong command of both English and Kannada. Kamal Haider married Waheeda, the daughter of Ahmed from Mangalore, and they lived in Manipal for some time before moving to Calcutta, where he worked for the “Star of India” newspaper and in Prepress in Mumbai.

In 1946, Haider relocated to Lahore, Pakistan. There, he worked as the news editor for an English newspaper started by the Muslim League under Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s leadership. He eventually became the editor of the “Pakistan Times,” retiring in 1974 after a distinguished career.

Besides journalism, Kamal Haider was an accomplished photographer with a collection of rare cameras. His career took him to many countries, and in 1980, he represented Pakistan at the United Nations General Assembly.

Details about Kamal Haider’s parents are not available. He passed away in 1998.

ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಜನಾಂಗದ ಪ್ರಪ್ರಥಮ ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಗ್ಗಳಿಕೆಗೆ ಪಾತ್ರರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಕಮಾಲ್ ಹೈದರ್

ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಕುಟುಂಬದಲ್ಲಿ 1916ರಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದ್ದ ಕಮಾಲ್ ಹೈದರ್ ವೃತ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ತನ್ನ 30ರ ಹರೆಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂದರೆ 1946ರಲ್ಲಿ ದೇಶ ಬಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದರೂ ತನ್ನ ಒಡನಾಡಿಗಳ ಜೊತೆ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲೇ ಪತ್ರ ವ್ಯವಹಾರ ಮಾಡುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಅಪ್ಪಟ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗ ಎಂದು ಕಮಾಲ್ ಹೈದರ್ ಗುರುತಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿದ್ದರು.

ಕಮಾಲ್ ಹೈದರ್ ತನ್ನ 18ನೆ ಹರೆಯದಲ್ಲೇ ಪ್ರತಿಭಾವಂತ ಕನ್ನಡ ಪತ್ರಕರ್ತರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. “ಅಂತರಂಗ” ಎಂಬ ಪತ್ರಿಕೆಯ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥಾಪಕ ಸಂಪಾದಕರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. 1935ರಲ್ಲಿ ಮಂಜೇಶ್ವರದಿಂದ ಹೊರಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ “ಜ್ಯೋತಿ” ಪತ್ರಿಕೆಯ ಸಂಪಾದಕರೂ ಆಗಿದ್ದರು. ಅಂಕಣಕಾರರೂ ಆಗಿದ್ದ ಕಮಾಲ್ ಹೈದರ್‌ಗೆ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ, ಕನ್ನಡವಲ್ಲದೆ ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಭಾಷೆಯ ಮೇಲೂ ಹಿಡಿತವಿತ್ತು. ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಅಹ್ಮದ್ ಅವರ ಪುತ್ರಿ ವಹೀದಾ ಅವರನ್ನು ಮದುವೆಯಾಗಿದ್ದ ಕಮಾಲ್ ಹೈದರ್ ಮಣಿಪಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲಕಾಲ ವಾಸವಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಬಳಿಕ ಕಲ್ಕತ್ತಾಕ್ಕೆ ತೆರಳಿ “ಸ್ಟಾರ್ ಆಫ್ ಇಂಡಿಯಾ” ಪತ್ರಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮುಂಬೈಯ ಪ್ರೀಪ್ರೆಸ್‌ನಲ್ಲೂ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡತೊಡಗಿದ್ದರು. 1946ರಲ್ಲಿ ಲಾಹೋರ್‌ಗೆ ತೆರಳಿ ಪಾಕಿಸ್ತಾನದಲ್ಲೇ ನೆಲೆಸಿದ್ದರು. ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಮುಹಮ್ಮದಲಿ ಜಿನ್ನಾ ನೇತೃತ್ವದ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಂ ಲೀಗ್ ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದ್ದ ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಪತ್ರಿಕೆಯ ಸುದ್ದಿ ಸಂಪಾದಕರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ದೇಶ ವಿಭಜನೆಯ ಬಳಿಕ ಪಾಕಿಸ್ತಾನ ಟೈಮ್ಸ್ ಪತ್ರಿಕೆಯ ಸಂಪಾದಕರಾಗಿ 1974ರಲ್ಲಿ ನಿವೃತ್ತರಾದರು.
ಉತ್ತಮ ಛಾಯಾಗ್ರಾಹಕರೂ ಆಗಿದ್ದ ಕಮಾಲ್ ಹೈದರ್ ಅವರ ಬಳಿ ಅಪರೂಪದ ಸಂಗ್ರಹಯೋಗ್ಯ ಕ್ಯಾಮರಾಗಳು ಇತ್ತೆನ್ನಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಹಲವು ದೇಶಗಳಿಗೆ ಪ್ರವಾಸ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದ ಕಮಾಲ್ ಹೈದರ್ 1980ರಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಶ್ವಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಅಧಿವೇಶನದಲ್ಲೂ ಪಾಕಿಸ್ತಾನವನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿನಿಧಿಸಿದ್ದರು.
ಕಮಾಲ್ ಹೈದರ್ ಅವರ ತಂದೆ ಮತ್ತು ತಾಯಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ಲಭ್ಯವಾಗುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ, ಅವರು 1998ರಲ್ಲಿ ಇಹಲೋಕ ತ್ಯಜಿಸಿದ್ದರು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ.
