Kendra Beary Sahitya Parishath

Mangalore

The first Beary Sahitya Sammelana organized by Beary Sahitya Mattu Samskritika Sangha on 11 November, 1998, at Purabhavana, Mangalore was a milestone in the history of the Beary movement. Veteran Writer B M Iddinabba was the president of the Sammelana.
Beary leaders, writers and artists from the district worked tirelessly to make the event a success. The welcome committee formed for the purpose had more than a 100 members. B A Mohidin, the dynamic leader from the community, who was also the Minister of Industries for the Karnataka Government, was made the honorary president of the committee. Abdul Raheem T K and Muhammad Kulai was the president and general secretary of the committee, respectively. An exit meeting of the welcome committee was organized after the successful completion of the Sammelana in order to analyze the programmes conducted, approve the expenditures incurred and to dissolve the committee.
All members who attended expressed appreciations for the successful execution of the event. After all the expenses incurred, more than 1 lakh rupees was shown as savings by the committee. Senior members of the committee advised to retain it as a new organization, rather than dissolving it. After a long discussion, the committee was reformed and re-established as ‘Kendra Beary Sahitya Parishath’. Abdul Raheem T K was appointed as its founding president and U A Kasim Ullal became its general secretary.

Within a year of its formation, the Kendra Beary Sahitya Parishath conducted the 2nd Beary Sahitya Sammelana on 21 November, 1999, at Indian Auditorium in Neralkatte near Mani. Golthamajal Abdul Khadar Haji was its president. The 3rd Beary Sahitya Sammelana was held on 28 October, 2001, at Haleema Saab Auditorium at Udyavar near Udupi. Renowned researcher and writer Prof B M Ichlangod was its president. The 4th Beary Sahitya Sammelana was held on 27 February, 2007, at Vokkaligara Samudaya Bhavana, Chikkamagaluru. Famous writer Fakir Muhammad Katpadi was its president. The excellent track record of the Parishad in organizing the literary events led the government to recognize the cultural aspirations of the community and this resulted in the formation of Beary Sahitya Academy, a government body.

As all Beary programs have been conducted under the Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy since its inception, Kendra Beary Sahitya Parishath stayed inactive. D M Aslam is its current president and Hussain Katipalla is the general secretary. Attempts are underway to bring the Parishath to the forefront of Beary movement, once again.
