1934 – 2014

Mahmood Shekhabba was born in 1934 to M. Shekhabba and Ameena in Muloor, Udupi district. Growing up in poverty, Mahmood believed in living together peacefully, regardless of caste or religion. He always stood up for what was right, even when powerful people opposed him. He was loved by everyone in town for helping others without thinking about himself or his family.

Mahmood made sure that everyone, especially women, got an education. He worked as a headmaster at Belapu Primary School and taught at Mooloor Madrasa. He also managed the accounting for the local mosque and school.

He was active in politics and served as a member of the Gram Panchayat and the Udupi Taluk Land Justice Board. Mahmood fought for the rights of farmers and sharecroppers. He was also involved in religious and social activities and helped establish schools and mosques in his area.

Despite facing challenges and opposition, Mahmood remained steadfast in his pursuit of justice and social reform. His courage was evident in his principled stand against injustice, as demonstrated by his opposition to Indira Gandhi’s emergency measures, even at great personal risk.

In recognition of his social service, he was honored at the third Beary Sahitya Sammelan held in Udupi on October 21, 2001.

Mahmood was married to Beefathima, and they had five sons and five daughters. He passed away on March 15, 2014, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and service to others.
