Muhammad Hussain
1940 – 1992
Muhammad Hussain was born in 1940 in Kandat palli of mangalore to Ismail and Aisha, who hailed from Amblamogaru village in Mangalore taluk. After completing his education, he became a mechanical engineer at KPT in Mangalore and worked as a supervisor in the fisheries department.
Despite his government job, Muhammad Hussain always had a passion for social work and community service. Eventually, he decided to resign from his position to fully dedicate himself to social service. During this time, he was also approached by a political party, perhaps recognizing his potential to contribute to the community.
Amidst his commitment to social work, Muhammad Hussain ventured into business by founding “MH Timbers” in Hassan and Panemangalore. From 1970 to 1985, he dedicated himself to the timber business.
While balancing his business endeavors with his social service activities, Muhammad Hussain found alignment with the Janata Party. He officially joined the party in 1975 and took on the role of Dakshina Kannada District Convenor for the Janata Party’s Minority Division. Even after the Janata Party split and transformed into Janata Dal, he remained active in politics. Notably, he served as the Chairman of the Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) from 1985 to 1988.
In 1988, Muhammad Hussain threw his hat into the ring for the Mangalore Lok Sabha seat as the official candidate of the Janata Dal. At that time, the Janata Dal didn’t have a strong foothold in the Dakshina Kannada district. However, Muhammad Hussain’s leadership resonated with thousands of people, who cast their votes in favor of the Janata Dal. Despite facing off against senior Congress leader Janardana Pujari, Muhammad Hussain managed to secure an impressive 1,33,533 votes, showcasing his personal influence and standing in the region.
Muhammad Hussain was deeply committed to addressing the needs of the underprivileged and worked tirelessly for the development of the Muslim community. Together with S. Abdul Khader, the principal of Badria College, who shared his vision for the educational advancement of Muslims, Muhammad Hussain played a pivotal role in establishing Jamiyyatul Falah. Not only did he help establish it, but he also served as its founding president. Additionally, he took on the role of founder president for the Millat Credit Cooperative Society.
Muhammad Hussain, born and raised in a middle-class family, made the selfless choice to leave his government job to serve society. His commitment to public service and his untainted character have left an indelible mark. Despite his short life, he exceeded all expectations as a social and community leader. Muhammad Hussain passed away on August 30, 1992, leaving behind his wife Halima, four sons, and two daughters.
