1946 – 2021

Awwamma, affectionately known as “Kootelu Ajiji” or “Kooteli’s Ajiji,” was a revered native doctor who dedicated her life to healing thousands of patients. Born in 1946 as the youngest daughter of Hussain and Aisha from Kollamugeru near Manjeshwar, she learned the art of native medicine from her grandmother, Halimamma, blending traditional methods with Ayurvedic practices.

Until 1972, Awwamma practiced medicine from her mother’s home, and later continued her healing work at her husband’s residence in Kootelu near Uppinangadi. Over the years, she gained widespread recognition for her ability to treat ailments like skin conditions, insect bites, vaginal discharge, and more, using herbal remedies collected from the surrounding areas.

Initially, she sourced herbs herself from the forests near Uppinangadi, but as these resources dwindled, she relied on her children and acquaintances to gather them. Despite these challenges, Awwamma’s dedication and skill earned her the gratitude of countless patients, whom she treated with care and compassion.

In acknowledgment of her service, Awwamma received the Mahila Sadhana Award from various organizations including the Uppinangadi Gram Panchayat, Niti Golithattu Unit, NWF organization, Sahasra Coaching Center Uppinangadi, and JCI Uppinangadi. These honors recognized her significant contributions to healthcare and her community.

Awwamma passed away on August 30, 2021, leaving behind a legacy of healing and compassion. She is survived by her sons Muhammad Mustafa, Hanza, Ahraf Hasan Rahman, and daughters Aisha, Mariamma, Hajira, and Sauda. Continuing her mother’s legacy, Hajira has taken up the mantle of service at their home in Kootelu, ensuring that Awwamma’s commitment to helping others lives on.

ರೋಗಿಗಳ ಆಪತ್ಭಾಂದವರಾಗಿದ್ದ ನಾಟಿ ವೈದ್ಯೆ ಅವ್ವಮ್ಮ

ಉಪ್ಪಿನಂಗಡಿ ಸಮೀಪದ ಕೂಟೇಲು ನಿವಾಸಿ ಈಸುಬು ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಅವರ ಪತ್ನಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದ ನಾಟಿ ವೈದ್ಯೆ ಅವ್ವಮ್ಮ ಸಾವಿರಾರು ರೋಗಿಗಳ ಆಪತ್ಬಾಂಧವರಾಗಿದ್ದರು ಎನ್ನಬಹುದು. ಮೂಲತಃ ಮಂಜೇಶ್ವರ ಸಮೀಪದ ಕೊಲ್ಲಮುಗೇರು ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿನ ಹುಸೈನ್-ಆಯಿಶಾ ದಂಪತಿಯ 9 ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಪೈಕಿ ಕಿರಿಯ ಮಗಳಾಗಿ 1946ರಲ್ಲಿ ಅವ್ವಮ್ಮ ಜನಿಸಿದರು. ತನ್ನ ಅಜ್ಜಿ ಹಲಿಮಮ್ಮ ಅವರಿಂದ ನಾಟಿ ವಿದ್ಯೆ ಕಲಿತ ಅವ್ವಮ್ಮ ಕೆಂಪು, ಸರ್ಪಸುತ್ತು, ವಿಷ ಜಂತು ಕಡಿತ, ಮಹಿಳೆಯರ ಬಿಳಿಸರೆಗು ಮತ್ತಿತರ ಕಾಯಿಲೆಗಳಿಗೆ ನಾಟಿ ಮತ್ತು ಆಯುರ್ವೇದ ಪದ್ಧತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ ನೀಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. 1972ರವರೆಗೂ ತನ್ನ ತಾಯಿ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದುಕೊಂಡು ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ ನೀಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಬಳಿಕ ಕೂಟೇಲು ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿರುವ ತನ್ನ ಪತಿಯ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲೂ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ ಮುಂದುವರಿಸಿದರು. ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಮತ್ತು ಕೇರಳದ ಸಾವಿರಾರು ರೋಗಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ ನೀಡುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಅವರು ಮನೆ ಮಾತಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಸ್ಥಳೀಯವಾಗಿ “ಕೂಟೇಲು ಅಜ್ಜಿ ಅಥವಾ ಕೂಟೇಲ್ದ ಅಜ್ಜಿ” ಎಂದೇ ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.
ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಉಪ್ಪಿನಂಗಡಿ ಸುತ್ತಮುತ್ತಲಿನ ಪರಿಸರದಿಂದ ಗಿಡಮೂಲಿಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸಂಗ್ರಹಿಸಿ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲೇ ಸ್ವತಃ ಔಷಧ ತಯಾರಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಕಾಡುಗಳು ಅಳಿದ ಬಳಿಕ ಗಿಡಮೂಲಿಕೆಗಾಗಿ ತನ್ನ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಮತ್ತು ಪರಿಚಯಸ್ಥರನ್ನು ಅವಲವಂಬಿಸಬೇಕಾಯಿತು. ಆದರೂ ತನ್ನ ಸೇವೆ-ವೃತ್ತಿಯ ಮೂಲಕ ಸಾವಿರಕ್ಕೂ ಅಧಿಕ ಮಂದಿಯ ರೋಗ ಶಮನಗೊಳಿಸಿ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕರ ಪ್ರಶಂಸೆಗೆ ಪಾತ್ರರಾಗಿದ್ದರು.
ಅವ್ವಮ್ಮ ಅವರ ಸೇವೆಯನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸಿ ಉಪ್ಪಿನಂಗಡಿ ಗ್ರಾಮ ಪಂಚಾಯತ್ ವತಿಯಿಂದ ಮಹಿಳಾ ಸಾಧನಾ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ, ನೀತಿ ಗೋಳಿತಟ್ಟು ಘಟಕ, ಎನ್‌ಡಬ್ಲ್ಯುಎಫ್ ಸಂಘಟನೆ, ಸಹಸ್ರ ಕೋಚಿಂಗ್ ಸೆಂಟರ್ ಉಪ್ಪಿನಂಗಡಿ, ಜೆಸಿಐ ಉಪ್ಪಿನಂಗಡಿ ಹೀಗೆ ಹಲವು ಸಂಘ-ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳು ಸನ್ಮಾನಿಸಿವೆ. ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ನೀಡಿ ಗೌರವಿಸಿವೆ.
2021ರ ಆಗಸ್ಟ್ 30ರಂದು ನಿಧನರಾದ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಪುತ್ರರಾದ ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಮುಸ್ತಫಾ, ಹಂಝ, ಅಹ್ರಾಫ್ ಹಸನ್ ರಹ್ಮಾನ್ ಮತ್ತು ಪುತ್ರಿಯರಾದ ಆಯಿಶಾ, ಮರಿಯಮ್ಮ, ಹಾಜಿರಾ, ಸೌದಾ ಇದ್ದಾರೆ. ಈ ಪೈಕಿ ಹಾಜಿರಾ ತನ್ನ ತಾಯಿಯ ಸೇವೆ-ವೃತ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಕೂಟೇಲು ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲೇ ಮುಂದುವರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
