P.A. Khader Kukkadi

Born on December 4, 1929, Panambur Abdul Khader Kukkadi, known as P.A. Khader Kukkadi, hailed from Baikampadi, where he grew up in the “Kukkadi House” owned by Hasanabba Beary-Alimamma, a prominent grocery merchant and the president of Baikampadi Gram Panchayat.

His educational journey began in Panambur Elementary School, followed by Vidyadayini High School in Suratkal. Crossing the Koolur River by boat, he pursued his intermediate education at St. Aloysius College, Mangalore. Subsequently, he attained his BA and MA degrees in Economics, along with an LLB degree. His academic prowess was evident as he secured the first rank in E.C. and MA degrees, and the second rank in BA and LLB degrees from Madras University.

Under the tutelage of senior lawyer Purushottam Pujari, P.A. Khader Kukkadi honed his legal skills and earned the affectionate moniker “Vakilaka” from the villagers.

After his stint as a lecturer at Sarada College, Mysore, P.A. Khader Kukkadi ventured into the Labor Department of the Central Government, where he dedicated himself to the betterment of workers. Concurrently, he initiated Varkasra Education, emphasizing the importance of education.

During his tenure as an officer in Bangalore, he earned a scholarship from the International Labor Organization, affording him the opportunity to study for three months in Denmark, Sweden, France, and England.

In 1964, he assumed the role of Regional Director of the Labor Department in Mangalore. Subsequently, he was promoted to Deputy Director and transferred to Nagpur.

Following his retirement from government service, P.A. Khader Kukkadi established an English-medium school in Baikampadi. Additionally, he served as the president of Baikampadi’s Jawahar Educational Association, recognizing the significance of education within the community and advocating for its advancement. With a keen focus on education, he emerged as a proficient educationist and visionary, fostering unity among diverse Muslim educational institutions in Dakshina Kannada district.

Moreover, he played a pivotal role as the founding president of the Federation of Muslim Education Institutes. Through his writings in various newspapers on educational topics, he garnered widespread attention and contributed significantly to the discourse on education.

P.A. Khader Kukkadi tied the knot with Papamma, also known as Aminamma, the daughter of the esteemed zamindar Bajpe Zakri Beary, in 1954. Together, they were blessed with four sons and a daughter. As a respected member of the renowned “Kukkadi” family of Baikampadi, P.A. Khader Kukkadi contributed significantly to his community and beyond. He departed from this world on April 23, 2017, at a private hospital in Mangalore.
