Some people engage in social service for publicity, while others do it quietly without seeking recognition. S.M. Basheer is one such individual who dedicated his life to helping others without seeking the spotlight.

Born on February 27, 1971, near Shanti Angadi in BC Road, Bantwala Taluk, Basheer was the eldest of six children of SM Abdul Razzak and Zuhara. He completed his primary education at Infant Jesus School and Deepika School in Modankapu. He pursued his Pre-University Course at Badria College, Mangalore, and later earned his B.Com and M.Com (Management in Excellence Course) from Harvard University.

In 1993, after completing his education, Basheer moved to Kuwait to further his career. His inherent leadership qualities and a cultured character from childhood spurred him to continue his social service in the Gulf nation. He joined the Kuwait Kerala Muslim Association (KKMA) and actively engaged in various social service initiatives, focusing particularly on health and education.

Around 20 years ago, Basheer witnessed the struggles of people suffering from diabetes and formulated a plan to help them. Through his efforts and with the support of KKMA, he successfully established diabetes centers in Mangalore’s Father Mullers, Highland, and Kundapur Vinaya Hospitals. These centers continue to treat everyone equally, regardless of caste or religion, ensuring that quality healthcare is accessible to all.

S.M. Basheer, also known affectionately as “Big-B,” served as the president of KKMA and made significant contributions to society, especially in Karnataka. He was deeply committed to helping orphans, initiating various assistance programs. Recognizing the challenges faced by job seekers in Karnataka, he spearheaded job skills training through KKMA, providing crucial support and guidance.

Under his leadership, KKMA expanded its reach beyond Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, extending its philanthropic efforts statewide. He launched initiatives like ‘Dream House for the Poor,’ swiftly providing homes to 15 deserving families. A skilled organizer, S.M. Basheer mentored numerous organizations, earning widespread respect and admiration.

His passion for community welfare was evident in his close relationships and his ability to connect with people of all ages. He inspired youth to engage in societal service, embodying dedication to social causes throughout his life.

S.M. Basheer’s career in the Gulf further exemplified his commitment to excellence. After relocating from Kuwait to UAE, he completed the Management Essential Course at Harvard University and rose to Vice President at an international telecom company in Dubai, a rare achievement for a Kannadiga.

His legacy as a compassionate leader and advocate for social change remains a testament to his profound impact on countless lives, affirming his enduring influence in Karnataka and beyond.

S.M. Basheer, renowned for his dynamic leadership, played a pivotal role in the Bearys Chamber of Commerce and Industries (BCCI) UAE unit, leaving a lasting impact with numerous initiatives during his tenure as the president. He actively supported aspiring entrepreneurs and those pursuing self-employment, earning widespread recognition for his efforts. His commitment to nurturing leadership qualities through timely information and training further cemented his reputation as a household name.

Despite being based in the UAE, S.M. Basheer maintained strong connections with his roots in Mangalore, serving as a trustee and advisor at the Shepherd International Academy. He was instrumental in advancing initiatives aimed at providing high-quality education, even to underprivileged students.

A charismatic speaker fluent in English, Hindi, Kannada, Beary, Tulu, and Malayalam, S.M. Basheer was known for his oratory skills and held in high regard for his ability to inspire. He rejuvenated enthusiasm among employees through engaging webinars and seminars during the Corana virus pandemic.

Throughout his illustrious career, S.M. Basheer received numerous prestigious awards and accolades for his exceptional contributions. Sadly, after battling illness for about a year, he passed away on December 2, 2022, leaving behind his wife, two sons, and a daughter.

ಸಮಾಜ ಸೇವೆಯನ್ನು ಉಸಿರನ್ನಾಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ಎಸ್.ಎಂ.ಬಶೀರ್

ಕೆಲವರು ಪ್ರಚಾರದ ತೆವಲಿಗೆ ಬಿದ್ದು ಸಮಾಜ ಸೇವೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರತರಾದರೆ ಇನ್ನು ಕೆಲವರು ಪ್ರಚಾರದ ಹಂಗಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಸಮಾಜ ಸೇವೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅಂತಹ ಸಮಾಜ ಸೇವಕರ ಪೈಕಿ ಎಸ್.ಎಂ. ಬಶೀರ್ ಕೂಡ ಒಬ್ಬರು.
ಬಂಟ್ವಾಳ ತಾಲೂಕಿನ ಬಿ.ಸಿ.ರೋಡ್ ಸಮೀಪದ ಶಾಂತಿ ಅಂಗಡಿಯ ನಿವಾಸಿ ಎಸ್.ಎಂ. ಅಬ್ದುಲ್ ರಝಾಕ್-ಝುಹರಾ ದಂಪತಿಯ 6 ಮಂದಿ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಪೈಕಿ ಹಿರಿಯ ಪುತ್ರನಾಗಿ 1971ರ ಫೆಬ್ರವರಿ 27ರಂದು ಎಸ್.ಎಂ. ಬಶೀರ್ ಜನಿಸಿದರು.
ಬಿ.ಸಿ. ರೋಡ್‌ನ ಮೊಡಂಕಾಪು ಇನ್ಫೆಂಟ್ ಜೀಸೆಸ್ ಶಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಾಥಮಿಕ, ಮೊಡಂಕಾಪು ದೀಪಿಕಾ ಶಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರೌಢ, ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಬದ್ರಿಯಾ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪಿಯುಸಿ ಕಲಿತರು. ಬಳಿಕ ಹಾರ್ವರ್ಡ್ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾನಿಲಯದಿಂದ ಬಿಕಾಂ ಮತ್ತು ಎಂಕಾಂ (ಮ್ಯಾನೇಜ್ಮೆಂಟ್ ಇನ್ ಎಕ್ಸೆಲೆನ್ಸ್ ಕೋರ್ಸ್) ಮಾಡಿದರು.

ಪದವಿಯ ಬಳಿಕ ವೃತ್ತಿ ಜೀವನಕ್ಕಾಗಿ 1993ರಲ್ಲಿ ಕುವೈತ್‌ಗೆ ತೆರಳಿದರು. ಚಿಕ್ಕಂದಿನಿಂದಲೇ ನಾಯಕತ್ವ ಮತ್ತು ಸುಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಗುಣ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಗಲ್ಫ್ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರದಲ್ಲೂ ಪರರಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡುವ ಉದ್ದೇಶವಿರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು. ಅದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಕುವೈತ್‌ನ “ಕುವೈತ್ ಕೇರಳ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಂ ಅಸೋಸಿಯೇಶನ್” (ಕೆಕೆಎಂಎ) ಸಂಘಟನೆಯ ಸದಸ್ಯತ್ವ ಪಡೆದು ಸಮಾಜ ಸೇವೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಕ್ರಿಯರಾದರು. ಜನಸಾಮಾನ್ಯರ ಆರೋಗ್ಯ, ಶಿಕ್ಷಣದತ್ತ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಗಮನಹರಿಸಿದರು.
ಸುಮಾರು 20 ವರ್ಷದ ಹಿಂದೆಯೇ ಮಧುಮೇಹ ಕಾಯಿಲೆಯಿಂದ ಬಳಲುವವರನ್ನು ತೀರಾ ಹತ್ತಿರದಿಂದ ಕಂಡಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಅದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಯೋಜನೆಯನ್ನು ರೂಪಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಕೆಕೆಎಂಎ ಮೂಲಕ ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಫಾದರ್ ಮುಲ್ಲರ್ಸ್, ಹೈಲ್ಯಾಂಡ್, ಕುಂದಾಪುರದ ವಿನಯ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಡಯಾಬಿಟಿಸ್ ಕೇಂದ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಆರಂಭಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಕೂಡಾ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಜಾತಿ, ಧರ್ಮದ ಭೇದವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಸಮಾನ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ ನೀಡುವ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ ಇದೆ.

ಕೆಕೆಎಂಎ ಸಂಘಟನೆಯ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿಯೂ ಕಾರ್ಯನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಿದ್ದ ಎಸ್.ಎಂ. ಬಶೀರ್ ಸಮಾಜದ ಅನಾಥರನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸಿ ಅವರ ಸಂಕಷ್ಟಕ್ಕೆ ನೆರವು ನೀಡತೊಡಗಿದರು. ಸೂಕ್ತ ಮಾಹಿತಿ, ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶನವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಉದ್ಯೋಗ ಅರಸಿಕೊಂಡು ತೆರಳುವ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಅನೇಕ ಮಂದಿ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗೆ ಸಿಲುಕಿದಾಗ ಕೆಕೆಎಂಎ ಮೂಲಕ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಉದ್ಯೋಗ ಕೌಶಲ ತರಬೇತಿ ನೀಡತೊಡಗಿದ್ದರು. ಕೆಕೆಎಂಎ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಘಟಕದ ಸ್ಥಾಪನೆಯಲ್ಲೂ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಪಾತ್ರ ವಹಿಸಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಅನಿವಾಸಿಗರು ಮತ್ತು ಅವರ ಕುಟುಂಬಗಳ ಸದಸ್ಯರ ಹಿತಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಕೆಕೆಎಂಎ ಮೂಲಕ ಅನೇಕ ಜನಪರ ಯೋಜನೆಗಳನ್ನು ರೂಪಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಅದರ ಅನುಷ್ಠಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಂಚೂಣಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರು. ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಮತ್ತು ಉಡುಪಿ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಗೆ ಸೀಮಿತವಾಗಿದ್ದ ಕೆಕೆಎಂಎ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಘಟಕದ ಯೋಜನೆಯನ್ನು ರಾಜ್ಯಾದ್ಯಂತ ವಿಸ್ತರಿಸಿದ ಕೀರ್ತಿಗೂ ಪಾತ್ರರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ‘ಬಡವರಿಗೆ ಕನಸಿನ ಮನೆ’ ಎಂಬ ಯೋಜನೆಯನ್ನು ಹುಟ್ಟು ಹಾಕಿ ಅಲ್ಪ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಅರ್ಹ 15 ಕುಟುಂಬಗಳಿಗೆ ಮನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಒದಗಿಸಿ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆದಿದ್ದರು. ನುರಿತ ಸಂಘಟಕರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಅನೇಕ ಸಂಘಟನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶನ ನೀಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ವಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ “ಬಿಗ್-ಬಿ” ಎಂದೇ ಗುರುತಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿದ್ದರು.

ಸಮುದಾಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅಪಾರ ಕಾಳಜಿ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಸಮಾಜ ಸೇವೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸದಾ ನಿರತರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಎಲ್ಲರ ಜೊತೆಯೂ ಆತ್ಮೀಯ ಸಂಬಂಧ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದರು. ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಅವರ ಸ್ನೇಹ ಸಂಪಾದಿಸಿದರೆ ಅಗಲಿರಲಾರದಷ್ಟು ಅವರು ಹೊಂದಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಅದು ಅವರ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವದ ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ತನ್ನ ಅತ್ಯಲ್ಪ ಅವಧಿಯ ಬದುಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕ ಮಹತ್ತರವಾದುದನ್ನು ಸಾಧಿಸಿ ತೋರಿಸಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಹಿರಿಯ, ಕಿರಿಯರಲ್ಲಿ ಆತ್ಮೀಯತೆಯಿಂದ ಬೆರೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಸಮಾಜ ಸೇವೆ ಮಾಡಲು ಯುವಕರಿಗೆ ಸದಾ ಸ್ಫೂರ್ತಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಬದುಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಕಷ್ಟಪಡುವ ಅದೆಷ್ಟೋ ಬಡವರ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗೆ ಸ್ಪಂದಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಎಸ್.ಎಂ. ಬಶೀರ್ ತನ್ನ ಬದುಕನ್ನು ಸಮಾಜ ಸೇವೆಗೆ ಮೀಸಲಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದರು ಎಂದರೂ ತಪ್ಪಾಗಲಾರದು.

ಗಲ್ಫ್ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ವೃತ್ತಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಮಾಜ ಸೇವೆಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಿಯನ್ನಾಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ಎಸ್.ಎಂ. ಬಶೀರ್ ಸಂಘ, ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಜನಸಾಮಾನ್ಯರೊಡನೆ ಬೆರೆತು ಸಂದಿಗ್ಧ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯನ್ನು ನಿಭಾಯಿಸುವ ದೃಢತೆ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದರು. ಕುವೈತ್‌ನನಿಂದ ಯುಎಇಗೆ ತೆರಳಿದ ಎಸ್.ಎಂ. ಬಶೀರ್ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಿತ ಹಾರ್ವರ್ಡ್ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾನಿಲಯದಿಂದ ಮ್ಯಾನೇಜ್ಮೆಂಟ್ ಎಸ್ಲೆಂಷಿಯಲ್ ಕೋರ್ಸ್ ಪಡೆದು ದುಬೈಯ ಗ್ರೂಫ್ ಆಫ್ ಇಂಟರ್ ನ್ಯಾಷನಲ್ (ಟೆಲಿಕಾಂ ಕಂಪೆನಿ)ನ ಉಪಾಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಹುದ್ದೆಗೆ ನಿಯುಕ್ತಿಗೊಂಡರು. ಉದ್ಯೋಗ ಕೌಶಲ್ಯತೆಗೆ ಸ್ವತಃ ತಾನೇ ಮಾದರಿಯಾಗಿರುವ ಎಸ್.ಎಂ. ಬಶೀರ್ ಇಂತಹ ಉನ್ನತ ಹುದ್ದೆಯನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ಅಪರೂಪದ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬರಾಗಿದ್ದರು.
ಈ ಮಧ್ಯೆ ಬ್ಯಾರೀಸ್ ಛೇಂಬರ್ ಆಫ್ ಕಾಮರ್ಸ್ ಆ್ಯಂಡ್ ಇಂಡಸ್ಟ್ರೀಸ್ (ಬಿಸಿಸಿಐ) ಯುಎಇ ಘಟಕದ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರೂ ಆಗಿ ಅನೇಕ ಕೆಲಸ-ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆದಿದ್ದರು. ವ್ಯಾಪಾರ, ಸ್ವಉದ್ಯೋಗ ಮಾಡಲು ಮುಂದಾಗುವವರಿಗೆ ನೆರವಿನ ಹಸ್ತ ಚಾಚಿದ್ದರು. ಸಕಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ಬೇಕಾದ ಮಾಹಿತಿ, ನಾಯಕತ್ವ ಗುಣಗಳನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ತರಬೇತಿ ನೀಡುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಅಲ್ಲೂ ಮನೆ ಮಾತಾಗಿದ್ದರು.
ಯುಎಇನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರೂ ಕೂಡ ತನ್ನ ಜನ್ಮನಾಡಿನೊಂದಿಗೆ ನಿಕಟ ಸಂಪರ್ಕ ಬೆಳೆಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಶೆಫರ್ಡ್ ಇಂಟರ್ ನ್ಯಾಷನಲ್ ಅಕಾಡಮಿಯ ಟ್ರಸ್ಟಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸಲಹೆಗಾರರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಬಡ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗೂ ಅಂತರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಮಟ್ಟದ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ನೀಡುವ ಯೋಜನೆಗೆ ಕೈ ಜೋಡಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.

ಉತ್ತಮ ವಾಗ್ಮಿಯೂ ಆಗಿದ್ದ ಎಸ್.ಎಂ. ಬಶೀರ್ ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್, ಹಿಂದಿ, ಕನ್ನಡ, ಬ್ಯಾರಿ, ತುಳು, ಮಲೆಯಾಳಂ ಭಾಷೆಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರರ್ಗಳವಾಗಿ ಮಾತನಾಡಬಲ್ಲವರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಕೊರೋನ ಸಂದರ್ಭ ವೆಬಿನಾರ್, ಸೆಮಿನಾರ್ ನಡೆಸುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಉದ್ಯೋಗಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊಸ ಸಂಚಲನ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಸಫಲರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಪಾದರಸದಂತಹ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವದ ಎಸ್.ಎಂ. ಬಶೀರ್ ಅವರ ಜೀವಮಾನದ ಸಾಧನೆಗೆ ಹಲವು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಿತ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ, ಪುರಸ್ಕಾರಗಳು ಲಭಿಸಿದೆ. ಸುಮಾರು ಒಂದು ವರ್ಷ ಅನಾರೋಗ್ಯಕ್ಕೀಡಾಗಿದ್ದ ಅವರನ್ನು ಕೇರಳದ ಕೊಚ್ಚಿನ್‌ನ ಖಾಸಗಿ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಗೆ ದಾಖಲಿಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ ಫಲಕಾರಿಯಾಗದೆ 2022ರ ಡಿಸೆಂಬರ್ 2ರಂದು ಪತ್ನಿ, ಇಬ್ಬರು ಪುತ್ರರು ಮತ್ತು ಒಬ್ಬರು ಪುತ್ರಿಯನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟಗಲಿದರು.
