U.A. Kasim Ullal is a well-known name in Beary literary circles. Actively engaged in Beary language, literature, culture, and art, he dispelled the notion that no one reads Beary-language works. He wrote not only short articles and stories but also historical novels, cultivating a love for reading. Kasim Ullala, known for his straightforwardness, contributed to literature, organizations, education, and religious fields.

Born on October 1, 1946, to Abdul Khader and Atheejamma in Ullal, Kasim Ullal completed his 7th standard at Board School, Ullal Town, and his 10th at Anandashram School, Kotekar. He received religious education from Abdul Rahman Kunhi Koya Thangal, known as Ullal Thangal, and learned Arabic from Muhammad Ali, an Arabic linguist from Mangalore. Kasim had a deep interest in literature from a young age, earning him the nickname “Vothka” (meaning READER) from his family. He was not only an avid reader but also a writer, composing Tulu plays, devotional hymns, and songs, and acting in plays, some of which were performed.

Between the ages of 16 and 20, he opened three grocery stores in Thokkottu and Attavar and was involved in the rice business. Alongside these ventures, Kasim began writing actively for Sanmarga and Mungaru newspapers. He also worked in Saudi Arabia for some time. Later, he ran a ration shop in Attavar, Mangalore, holding more than 3,000 ration cards—the highest in the district.

Kasim Ullal’s literary works include the Beary novel “Tarawad,” the Beary play “Aa Naal Eppa Baru?”, and the religious work “Niskarate Kirma, Adl Cheldad, Adro Artha.” He also wrote the Kannada novel “Besuge.” His stories, novels, poems, and articles in Beary, Tulu, and Kannada positioned him at the forefront of the Beary movement. The cassette of his play “Aa Naal Eppa Baru?” sold over 5,000 copies.

Kasim was a newspaper columnist, founding member of the Beary Sahithya Mathu Sanskrithika Sangha, and later its Honorary President. He served as the founder secretary of Kendra Beary Sahitya Parishad and the secretary of the Muslim Lekhakara Sangha. Additionally, he was a member of the Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy and a recipient of the Beary Academy Award.

U.A. Kasim Ullal, who bought a new dimension to Beary literature, passed away on 20/06/2022 leaving behind his wife, four sons including Beary Boss famous Beary Zulfi and three daughters. His funeral rites were conducted at Kallapu Patla near Thokkotu of Ullal.

ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊಸ ಆಯಾಮ ನೀಡಿದ್ದ ಯು.ಎ. ಖಾಸಿಮ್ ಉಳ್ಳಾಲ

ಯು.ಎ. ಖಾಸಿಮ್ ಉಳ್ಳಾಲ ಎಂಬ ಈ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ವಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇಳದವರು ವಿರಳ ಎನ್ನಬಹುದು. ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಭಾಷೆ, ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ, ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ, ಕಲೆ ಹೀಗೆ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಕ್ರಿಯವಾಗಿ ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ಯು.ಎ. ಖಾಸಿಮ್ ಉಳ್ಳಾಲ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದುದನ್ನು ಓದುವವರೇ ಇಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬ ಕಲ್ಪನೆಯನ್ನು ದೂರ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರು. ಅಂದರೆ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಣ್ಣಪುಟ್ಟ ಲೇಖನ, ಕತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ ಬರೆದು ಸುಮ್ಮನಿರದೆ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನೂ ಬರೆದು ಓದುವ ರುಚಿ ಹಚ್ಚಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ನೇರ ನಡೆನುಡಿಯ ಯು.ಎ. ಖಾಸಿಮ್ ಉಳ್ಳಾಲ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ, ಸಂಘಟನೆ, ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ, ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲೂ ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು.

ಉಳ್ಳಾಲದ ಅಬ್ದುಲ್ ಖಾದರ್-ಅತೀಜಮ್ಮ ದಂಪತಿಯ ಪುತ್ರನಾಗಿ 1946ರ ಅಕ್ಟೋಬರ್ 1ರಂದು ಯು.ಎ. ಖಾಸಿಮ್ ಜನಿಸಿದರು. ಉಳ್ಳಾಲ ಪೇಟೆಯ ಬೋರ್ಡ್ ಶಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ 7ನೆ ತರಗತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಕೋಟೆಕಾರ್‌ನ ಆನಂದಾಶ್ರಮದ ಶಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ 10ನೆ ತರಗತಿ ಕಲಿತರು. ಉಳ್ಳಾಲ ತಂಙಳ್ ಎಂದೇ ಖ್ಯಾತಿ ಪಡೆದಿದ್ದ ಅಬ್ದುಲ್ ರಹ್ಮಾನ್ ಕುಂಞಿಕೋಯ ತಂಙಳ್ ಅವರಿಂದ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಪಡೆದ ಖಾಸಿಮ್ ಬಳಿಕ ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಅರಬಿ ಭಾಷಾ ಪಂಡಿತ ಮುಹಮ್ಮದಲಿ ಅವರಿಂದ ಅರಬಿ ಕಲಿತರು. ಖಾಸಿಮ್ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಬಾಲ್ಯದಲ್ಲೇ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಪಾರ ಆಸಕ್ತಿಯಿತ್ತು. ಸದಾ ಓದುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಅವರನ್ನು ಕುಟುಂಬದ ಸದಸ್ಯರು “ಓತಾಕ” ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಓದುವುದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಬರವಣಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲೂ ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು. ತುಳು ನಾಟಕಗಳನ್ನು ಬರೆದಿದ್ದರು. ಭಕ್ತಿಗೀತೆಗಳು, ಹಾಡುಗಳನ್ನು ರಚಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ನಾಟಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಟಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಕೆಲವು ನಾಟಕಗಳು ಪ್ರದರ್ಶನಗೊಂಡಿತ್ತು. ಈ ಮಧ್ಯೆ ದಿನಸಿ ಅಂಗಡಿ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರ ಮಾಡತೊಡಗಿದರು. ಅಂದರೆ ತೊಕ್ಕೊಟ್ಟು, ಅತ್ತಾವರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂರು ದಿನಸಿ ಅಂಗಡಿ ತೆರೆದಿದ್ದರು. ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಅಕ್ಕಿ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರದಲ್ಲೂ ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು. ಇದೆಲ್ಲವೂ ತನ್ನ 16ರಿಂದ 20 ವರ್ಷ ಪ್ರಾಯದೊಳಗೆ ಅವರು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದ ಕಾರುಬಾರು ಆಗಿತ್ತು. ದಿನಸಿ ಅಂಗಡಿ, ಅಕ್ಕಿಯ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರದ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಸನ್ಮಾರ್ಗ, ಮುಂಗಾರು ಪತ್ರಿಕೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಖಾಸಿಮ್ ಉಳ್ಳಾಲ ಸಕ್ರಿಯವಾಗಿ ಬರೆಯತೊಡಗಿದರು. ಸೌದಿ ಅರೇಬಿಯಾದಲ್ಲೂ ಕೆಲಕಾಲ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರು. ಬಳಿಕ ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಅತ್ತಾವರದಲ್ಲಿ ರೇಶನ್ ಅಂಗಡಿ (ನ್ಯಾಯಬೆಲೆ ಅಂಗಡಿ)ಯನ್ನು ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಸುಮಾರು 3 ಸಾವಿರಕ್ಕೂ ಅಧಿಕ ರೇಶನ್ ಕಾರ್ಡ್ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದರು. ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯಲ್ಲೇ ಅವರಷ್ಟು ಪಡಿತರ ಚೀಟಿ ಹೊಂದಿದ ನ್ಯಾಯಬೆಲೆ ಅಂಗಡಿ ಬೇರೆ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದು ವಿಶೇಷ.
“ತರವಾಡ್’ (ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ), “ಆ ನಾಲ್ ಎಪ್ಪ ಬರು?’ (ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ನಾಟಕ), “ನಿಸ್ಕಾರತ್ತೆ ಕಿರ್‌ಮ, ಅದ್‌ಲ್ ಚೆಲ್ಡದ್, ಅದ್ರೊ ಅರ್ಥ” (ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಭಾಷೆಯ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಕೃತಿ)ಯಲ್ಲದೆ “ಬೆಸುಗೆ” ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅನೇಕ ಕತೆ, ಕಾದಂಬರಿ, ಕವನ, ಲೇಖನಗಳನ್ನು ಬ್ಯಾರಿ, ತುಳು, ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಖಾಸಿಮ್ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಆಂದೋಲನದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಂಚೂಣಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರು. “ಆ ನಾಲ್ ಎಪ್ಪ ಬರು?” ನಾಟಕದ ಕ್ಯಾಸೆಟ್ 5 ಸಾವಿರಕ್ಕೂ ಅಧಿಕ ಮಾರಾಟವಾಗಿದೆ.
ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ವಾರ್ತೆ ಪತ್ರಿಕೆಯ ಅಂಕಣಕಾರರೂ ಆಗಿದ್ದರು. ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ಸಂಘದ ಸ್ಥಾಪಕ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಖಾಸಿಮ್ ಬಳಿಕ ಗೌರವಾಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಪರಿಷತ್‌ನ ಸ್ಥಾಪಕ ಕಾರ್ಯದರ್ಶಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಮುಸ್ಲಿಮ್ ಲೇಖಕರ ಸಂಘದ ಕಾರ್ಯದರ್ಶಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರು.
ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಅಕಾಡಮಿಯ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಅಕಾಡಮಿಯ ಗೌರವ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿಗೂ ಭಾಜನರಾಗಿದ್ದರು.
