Yedappala Mahmood Musliyar, renowned as the “Revolution Man of Kodagu,” played a pivotal role in transforming the organizational landscape of Kodagu district, often referred to as the “Kashmir of Karnataka.” Also known as “Yedappala Ustad,” he was a significant figure in the region’s religious and social spheres.

Born on October 15, 1944, to senior scholar Kikkare Abdul Qader Master and Asma, Yedappala Mahmood Musliyar dedicated his life to organizational work. He served as the Assistant Qazi of Kodagu District United Jamaat and State Secretary of Karnataka Jamiatul Ulama. Musliyar completed his primary education in Kuppa, his mother’s hometown. He then pursued religious education, studying in Kondageri, Kodagu; Pokom near Talasseri; Thiruvattur in Taliparambu; and Kambadar in Kannur district. He learned under renowned scholars such as KC Abdullah Kutty Musliyar Manjeri, CP Muhammad Kutty Musliyar Thiruvattur, Kunabdullah Kutty Musliyar Pokom, N Abdullah Musliyar Pattuvam, Avaram Kutty Musliyar Talakkadatur, K Abdullah Musliyar Kuttipuram, and Ibrahim Kutty Musliyar Kapad.

Yedappala Musliyar began his public service in 1963, working as a Khatib and Mudarris in various locations, including Napoklu, Yedappala, Murnad, Virajpet, Emmemadu, and Mysore. He became deeply involved in organizational work from 1998, leaving an indelible mark with his efforts. During a time when most villages in Kodagu lacked adequate bus transport, Musliyar founded the “Jamiyatul Khutabaha” in 1968-69, uniting the khateebs of Kodagu. In 1969-70, he brought together prominent Umara leaders to form the “Coorg Muslim Association.” By 1971-72, he had established the “Coorg Zilla Jamiatul Ulama” to provide proper guidance and leadership to the Umaras. He also set up the “Kodagu District Islamic Education Institute” to implement a separate madrasa syllabus, tirelessly working day and night to mobilize various mohallas for these initiatives.

As the Khatib of the Kerala Jamaat in Mysore, Musliyar founded the “Nurul Islam Sabha” in Gausia Nagara, establishing an English medium school and Shafi-Hanafi madrasas. He later handed this organization over to Kanthapuram AP Abubakar Musliyar and returned to Kodagu. Yedappala Musliyar was instrumental in realizing the dream of the “Markazul Hidaya Educational Center” in Kottumudi, donated by his family in the name of Hanza Haji. He served as the President of Kodagu Jamiatul Ulama for ten years, resolving numerous issues through Raji Panchayat. The people of Kodagu looked up to him as a problem solver, and he was known for his mild demeanor and welcoming smile.

In 1966, Yedappala Musliyar married Fatima, the daughter of Yedappala Kurikade Hasan. They had two daughters and two sons. Musliyar, who lived in Kikkare, Yedappala, passed away on September 17, 2021. His life and contributions remain a significant part of Kodagu’s history, remembered for his dedication, humility, and transformative impact.

ಕೊಡಗಿನ ಕ್ರಾಂತಿ ಪುರುಷ ಎಡಪ್ಪಾಲ ಮಹ್‌ಮೂದ್ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಯಾರ್

ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಕಾಶ್ಮೀರವೆಂದೇ ಖ್ಯಾತವಾದ ಕಾಫಿಯ ತವರೂರು ಎಂದು ಗುರುತಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿರುವ ಕೊಡಗು ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಘಟನಾ ಕ್ರಾಂತಿಗೆ ಮುನ್ನುಡಿ ಬರೆದ ಎಡಪ್ಪಾಲ ಮಹ್‌ಮೂದ್ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಯಾರ್ ಕೊಡಗಿನ ಕ್ರಾಂತಿ ಪುರುಷ ಎಂದೇ ಚಿರಪರಿಚಿತರು. ಅಲ್ಲದೆ “ಎಡಪ್ಪಾಲ ಉಸ್ತಾದ್” ಎಂದೇ ಖ್ಯಾತರಾಗಿದ್ದರು.
1944ರ ಅಕ್ಟೋಬರ್ 15ರಂದು ಹಿರಿಯ ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸ ಕಿಕ್ಕರೆ ಅಬ್ದುಲ್ ಖಾದರ್ ಮಾಸ್ಟರ್-ಅಸ್ಮಾಅ್ ದಂಪತಿಯ ಪುತ್ರರಾಗಿ ಜನಿಸಿದ ಎಡಪ್ಪಾಲ ಮಹ್‌ಮೂದ್ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಯಾರ್ ತನ್ನ ಜೀವನದುದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ಸಂಘಟನೆಗಾಗಿ ದುಡಿದು, ಕೊಡಗು ಜಿಲ್ಲಾ ಸಂಯುಕ್ತ ಜಮಾಅತ್‌ನ ಸಹಾಯಕ ಖಾಝಿಯಾಗಿ, ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಜಂಇಯತುಲ್ ಉಲಮಾದ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಕಾರ್ಯದರ್ಶಿಯಾಗಿ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ್ದರು.
ಪ್ರಾಥಮಿಕ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣವನ್ನು ತಾಯಿಯ ತವರೂರಾದ ಕುಪ್ಪಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದರು. ನಂತರ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣದೆಡೆಗೆ ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ ಹಾಕಿದ ಎಡಪ್ಪಾಲ ಉಸ್ತಾದ್‌ರು ಕೊಡಗಿನ ಕೊಂಡಗೇರಿ, ತಲಶ್ಶೇರಿ ಸಮೀಪದ ಪೊಕೋಂ ಹಾಗೂ ತಳಿಪರಂಬುವಿನ ತಿರುವಟ್ಟೂರು ಮತ್ತು ಕಣ್ಣೂರು ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಕಾಂಬದಾರ್ ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾಭ್ಯಾಸ ಪಡೆದರು. ಪಾಪಿನಿಶೇರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆ.ಸಿ ಅಬ್ದುಲ್ಲ ಕುಟ್ಟಿ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಯಾರ್ ಮಂಜೇರಿ, ಸಿ.ಪಿ. ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಕುಟ್ಟಿ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಯಾರ್ ತಿರುವಟ್ಟೂರು, ಕುಂಞಬ್ದುಲ್ಲ ಕುಟ್ಟಿ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಯಾರ್ ಪೊಕೋಂ, ಎನ್. ಅಬ್ದುಲ್ಲ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಯಾರ್ ಪಟ್ಟುವಂ, ಅವರಾಂ ಕುಟ್ಟಿ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಯಾರ್ ತಲಕ್ಕಡತ್ತೂರ್, ಕೆ. ಅಬ್ದುಲ್ಲ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಯಾರ್ ಕುಟ್ಟಿಪುರಂ, ಇಬ್ರಾಹೀಂ ಕುಟ್ಟಿ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಯಾರ್ ಕಾಪಾಡ್ ಮತ್ತಿತರ ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸರಿಂದ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣವನ್ನು ಪಡೆದರು.
1963ರಿಂದ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ರಂಗಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾಲಿಟ್ಟ ಎಡಪ್ಪಾಲ ಉಸ್ತಾದರು ನಾಪೊಕ್ಲು, ಎಡಪ್ಪಾಲ, ಮೂರ್ನಾಡ್, ವಿರಾಜಪೇಟೆ, ಎಮ್ಮೆಮಾಡು, ಮೈಸೂರು ಮುಂತಾದ ಕಡೆ ಖತೀಬ್, ಮುದರ್ರಿಸ್ ಆಗಿ ಕಾರ್ಯನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಿದರು. 1998ರಿಂದ ಸಂಘಟನಾ ರಂಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಕ್ರಿಯವಾಗಿ ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಎಡಪ್ಪಾಲ ಉಸ್ತಾದ್‌ರ ಸಂಘಟನಾ ಕ್ರಾಂತಿಯು ಅವಿಸ್ಮರಣೀಯ.
ಕೊಡಗು ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಬಹುತೇಕ ಹಳ್ಳಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಈಗಲೂ ಸಮರ್ಪಕ ಬಸ್ ಸಾರಿಗೆಯ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಗಂಟೆಗೊಂದು ಬಸ್ ಚಲಿಸುವುದೇ ಅಪರೂಪವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ನಲವತ್ತು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಇದಕ್ಕಿಂತಲೂ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಓಡಾಡಲು ಬಸ್ ಸೌಕರ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲದ ಆ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂದರೆ 1968-69ರಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಡಗಿನ ಖತೀಬರನ್ನು ಒಟ್ಟು ಸೇರಿಸಿ “ಜಂಇಯತುಲ್ ಖುತಬಾಅ್” ಎಂಬ ಸಂಘಟನೆಗೆ ರೂಪು ಕೊಡುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಕೊಡಗಿನ ಇತಿಹಾಸದಲ್ಲೇ ಮೊಟ್ಟ ಮೊದಲ ಬಾರಿಗೆ ಸಂಘಟನೆಗೆ ಮುನ್ನುಡಿ ಬರೆದ ಕೀರ್ತಿ ಎಡಪ್ಪಾಲ ಉಸ್ತಾದ್‌ರಿಗೆ ಸಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆ. 1969-70ರಲ್ಲಿ ಊರಿನ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಉಮರಾ ನೇತಾರರನ್ನು ಒಗ್ಗೂಡಿಸಿ “ಕೂರ್ಗ್ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಂ ಅಸೋಸಿಯೇಶನ್’ಗೆ ರೂಪು ನೀಡಿದರು. ಉಮರಾಗಳಿಗೆ ಸೂಕ್ತ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ನೀಡುವ ಹಾಗೂ ಉಮಾರಾಗಳು ಉಲಮಾಗಳ ನಾಯಕತ್ವದಲ್ಲೇ ಸಾಗಬೇಕೆಂಬ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಿಂದ 1971-72ರಲ್ಲಿ “ಕೂರ್ಗ್ ಜಿಲ್ಲಾ ಜಂಇಯತುಲ್ ಉಲಮಾ’ಗೆ ಚಾಲನೆ ನೀಡಿದರು. ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕ ಮದ್ರಸ ಸಿಲೆಬಸ್ ಅಳವಡಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂಬ ಬೇಡಿಕೆ ಕೇಳಿ ಬಂದಾಗ “ಕೊಡಗು ಜಿಲ್ಲಾ ಇಸ್ಲಾಂ ವಿದ್ಯಾಭ್ಯಾಸ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆ” ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಲ್ಲಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾಭ್ಯಾಸ ಬೋರ್ಡನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಈ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಯೋಜನೆಯನ್ನು ಕಾರ್ಯರೂಪಕ್ಕೆ ತರಲು ಹಗಲಿರುಳು ಎನ್ನದೆ ವಿವಿಧ ಮೊಹಲ್ಲಾಗಳಿಗೆ ಓಡಾಡಿ ಸಂಘಟನೆಗೆ ಶಕ್ತಿ ತುಂಬಿದ ಪ್ರಮುಖರಲ್ಲಿ ಎಡಪ್ಪಾಲ ಉಸ್ತಾದ್ ಕೂಡ ಒಬ್ಬರಾಗಿದ್ದರು.

ಮೈಸೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇರಳ ಜಮಾಅತ್‌ನ ಖತೀಬರಾಗಿದ್ದಾಗ ಗೌಸಿಯಾ ನಗರ ಕೇಂದ್ರೀಕರಿಸಿ “ನೂರುಲ್ ಇಸ್ಲಾಂ ಸಭಾ” ಎಂಬ ಸಂಘಟನೆಗೆ ರೂಪು ನೀಡಿ ಅದರ ಅಧೀನದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಮೀಡಿಯಂ ಶಾಲೆ, ಶಾಫಿ-ಹನಫಿ ಮದ್ರಸಗಳನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಪಡಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಕೆಲವು ಸಮಯದ ಬಳಿಕ ಕಾಂತಪುರಂ ಎ.ಪಿ. ಅಬೂಬಕರ್ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಯಾರ್ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಹಸ್ತಾಂತರಿಸಿ ಕೊಡಗಿನತ್ತ ಮುಖ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಹಂಝ ಹಾಜಿಯ ಹೆಸರಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಕುಟುಂಬಸ್ಥರು ದಾನವಾಗಿ ನೀಡಿದ ಕೊಟ್ಟುಮುಡಿಯ ಹೃದಯ ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ “ಮರ್ಕಝುಲ್ ಹಿದಾಯ ಎಜುಕೇಶನಲ್ ಸೆಂಟರ್”ಗೆ ರೂಪು ನೀಡಲು ವಿವಿಧ ನಾಯಕರನ್ನು ಭೇಟಿಯಾಗಿ ಕೊಡಗಿನವರ ಕನಸನ್ನು ನನಸು ಮಾಡುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎಡಪ್ಪಾಲ ಉಸ್ತಾದ್‌ರ ತ್ಯಾಗ-ಸೇವೆಯನ್ನು ಮರೆಯಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ. ಕೊಡಗು ಜಂಇಯತುಲ್ ಉಲಮಾದ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ ಹತ್ತು ವರ್ಷ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ್ದ ಎಡಪ್ಪಾಲ ಉಸ್ತಾದ್‌ರು ಅನೇಕ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳನ್ನು ಆಲಿಸಿ ಅವುಗಳಿಗೆ ರಾಜಿ ಪಂಚಾಯತಿ ಮೂಲಕ ಪರಿಹಾರ ಕಂಡುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಹಲವು ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಕೊಡಗಿನ ಜನರು ಉಸ್ತಾದರನ್ನು ಪರಿಹಾರ ರೂಪವಾಗಿ ದರ್ಶಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸೌಮ್ಯ ಸ್ವಭಾವದ ಎಡಪ್ಪಾಲ ಉಸ್ತಾದರು ಯಾರೇ ತನ್ನ ಬಳಿಗೆ ಬಂದರೂ ನಗು ಮುಖದಿಂದ ಅವರನ್ನು ಹಾರೈಸಿ ಬೀಳ್ಕೂಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.
1966ರಲ್ಲಿ ಎಡಪ್ಪಾಲ ಕುರಿಕಾಡೆ ಹಸನ್ ಎಂಬವರ ಪುತ್ರಿ ಫಾತಿಮಾ ಅವರನ್ನು ವಿವಾಹವಾದ ಉಸ್ತಾದರಿಗೆ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಪುತ್ರಿಯರು ಮತ್ತು ಇಬ್ಬರು ಪುತ್ರರಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಎಡಪ್ಪಾಲದ ಕಿಕ್ಕರೆ ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸವಾಗಿದ್ದ ಉಸ್ತಾದರು 2021ರ ಸೆಪ್ಟಂಬರ್ 17ರಂದು ನಿಧನರಾದರು.
