Dr. Hammabba Pakkaladka’s name is synonymous with Shafi Clinic, making Pakkaladka town in Kankanadi Bajal renowned across the state. Born on August 22, 1948, to Unhabba and Mariamma of Ullal Alekala, he received his education at Saint Sebastian School before immersing himself in the study of Ayurveda under the guidance of his elder sister’s husband, Bhava Shekhabba Baichar, an Ayurvedic scholar.
After marriage, Dr. Hammabba moved to Bajal and established a modest clinic, initially operating out of a rented space. Despite the challenges of commuting by boat from Bangara Pade in Pavur-Harekala, he dedicated himself to serving the community, inspired by his uncle’s expertise in herbal medicine. As the sole healthcare provider in the area, Dr. Hammabba’s clinic gradually expanded, eventually evolving into the renowned Shafi Clinic.
Dr. Hammabba’s commitment to serving all, regardless of caste or financial status, earned him widespread respect. He tirelessly attended to patients, providing round-the-clock care and often personally collecting herbs to prepare medications. His compassionate approach endeared him to the community, and his clinic became a beacon of healing for those in need.
Under Dr. Hammabba’s stewardship, Shafi Clinic flourished, attracting patients not only from Mangalore but also from distant regions like Calicut, Bangalore, Mysore, and Goa. Renowned for its effective treatments, the clinic offered remedies for various ailments, including arthritis, colic, etc.
In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Hammabba cultivated interests in gardening, travel, and literature. His dedication to his profession was recognized in 1989 when he received the Dhanvantari Person of the Year Award from the Udupi-Dakshina Kannada Doctors Association.
Dr. Hammabba and his wife Sara were blessed with nine children, six of whom followed in their father’s footsteps to become doctors themselves. Their commitment to continuing Dr. Hammabba’s legacy ensures that Shafi Clinic remains a cornerstone of healthcare in the region. Dr. Hammabba-Sara couple have 9 children. 6 of those children continued their father’s profession, meaning 5 sons Dr. Salim, Dr. Zanuddin, Dr. Sadiq, Dr. Tamim and sons-in-law Dr. Tajuddin, Dr. Zaheer Hussain and daughter Saudha are also working as doctors.
Today, Shafi Clinic boasts inpatient facilities accommodating up to 40 patients and offers a wide range of medical services, including allopathic and dental treatments. Dr. Hammabba Pakkaladka’s selfless dedication to serving the community transformed a humble village into a renowned hub of healthcare excellence. His legacy lives on, embodying the spirit of compassion and service that defined his life. Dr. Hammabba Pakkaladka passed away on January 26, 2010, leaving behind a legacy of healing and hope.
