M. Sheikh Muhammad
1921 – 1971
M. Sheikh Muhammad, born in 1921 to Mammiaka and Zainabi in Kudroli, Mangalore, was a trailblazer in the field of photography among the Beary community. Known affectionately as M.S. Muhammad, he was not only a skilled photographer but also a proficient photo developer and printer.
His educational journey began in Mangalore’s Urdu school, where he laid the groundwork for his multilingual proficiency in Beary, Tulu, Kannada, and Urdu. This linguistic aptitude allowed him to delve into creative pursuits such as composing poetry and qawwali songs in Urdu, alongside his professional endeavors.
Beyond his artistic pursuits, Sheikh Muhammad also possessed a deep religious knowledge and was actively involved in imparting free religious education to children in the region. His commitment to spirituality extended to his occasional calls to prayer at the mosque.
While initially serving as a food inspector in the state food department, personal reasons prompted him to resign from his post. Subsequently, he ventured to Mumbai, where he honed his photography skills under the tutelage of friends in the film industry. This newfound expertise led him to Kasaragod, where he established his own photography studio, embarking on a professional journey that would leave an indelible mark.
Returning to Mangalore with his friend Manjunath, Sheikh Muhammad co-founded “Center Studio,” contributing to the burgeoning photography scene in the region. In an era when photography required patience and meticulous attention to detail, he viewed the process as a form of penance, mastering the craft with dedication. His accolades and awards in the field stand as a testament to his mastery and commitment.
He was married to Beefathima of Ullal, with whom he had five sons and three daughters. His legacy in photography and his contributions to the Beary community continue to be celebrated, even after his passing in 1971.
