Haji Fakhruddin Musliar (Jokatte Ustad)

1950 – 1997

Haji Fakhruddin Musliyar, born in 1950, to Chandolli Ahmad Beary and Fathimabivi began his journey in Chandolli near Nonaburu in Tirthahalli Taluk of Shimoga District, although another source suggests his birthplace as Toranamavu, Allur, Chikkamagaluru district. His early years were marked by adversity, as he lost his mother at a young age and was raised by his maternal aunt Aisha Umma (Aisamma) in Bajeya. Later, he found shelter and support under his brother-in-law Jokatte Hasanakar and began working as his assistant, initially selling Golisoda (ginger) and bread.

In 1965, during a religious lecture organized by Muhiyuddin Hosa Juma Mastid of Jokatte and the Jamaat Committee of Noorani, Fakhruddin was deeply moved by a discourse delivered by a religious scholar from Kerala about the significance of religious education. Inspired by this, he expressed his earnest desire to pursue religious scholarship. Without hesitation, he was enrolled in the Nooraniyyah madrasa nearby, despite being older than the other students in his class.

Despite facing ridicule from his peers for joining a class below his age, Fakhruddin remained steadfast in his dedication to learning. He embraced his studies wholeheartedly, demonstrating resilience and determination in pursuit of his goal to become a religious scholar.

During the period from 1966 to 1977, under the profound guidance of Kashi Abdul Qadir Haji, Fakhruddin Musliar embarked on his educational journey under the tutelage of Shaikhuna Ustadul Asateed Cheruvathur Abdullah Musliyar Al Bakhavi, renowned as Sajipa Ustad. Following this, he pursued higher education at Tajul Ulama Ullala Tanjala Syed Madani Arabic College from 1977 to 1981, where he was conferred with the esteemed title of “Madani”. Fakhruddin Musliyar’s academic journey was enriched by the mentorship of distinguished scholars such as Ullala Thangal, Ahmad Bawa Musliyar Ullal, Syed Abubakar Cherukunha Thangal, Tazhakkod Abdullah Ustad, and Baitar Ustad. Notably, he was the most prominent disciple of Kasaragod Qazi, Maulana Hasan Musliyar, whose teachings deeply influenced him.

Fakhruddin Musliyar initiated an educational revolution in the village of Jokatte, laying the foundation for progress in the field of education. In 1981, he played a pivotal role in establishing the Hayatul Islam Madrasa at “Kartawude” in Jokatte, marking the beginning of his service in the area. His efforts bore fruit, and he continued his dedicated service in Jokatte until 1997. One of his notable contributions was the establishment of the Swalat program in 1984, which gained widespread popularity. He demonstrated his commitment to community welfare by allocating the funds saved from Swalat Nerche into three categories: one portion for the commemoration of Muta Allima, another for the support of orphans and needy students under his care, and the remaining for the maintenance of the Masjid.

During his tenure, Juma prayers alternated between the new and old mosques of Jokatte, with Fakhruddin Musliar serving as the khatib of the old mosque.

Known for his simplicity and humility, Fakhruddin Musliyar’s legacy of service and dedication endured long after his passing on January 8, 1997. He left behind his wife, five sons, and three daughters.
