K.E. Muhammad Kodi, born on January 1, 1950, to Yusuf and Hawabi in Kodi, Kundapur taluk of Udupi district, was affectionately known as “Daf Ustad” throughout the taluk. Despite completing his education only up to the 5th standard, Muhammad found his passion in the dry fish business for his livelihood.

Around 1980, he received daf training from Usman Ustad, the khatib at Kundapur Kodi Masjid. Muhammad dedicated himself to mastering the art of playing the daf and soon became a revered teacher, instructing hundreds of students as a full-fledged “Daf Ustad.” His musical talents extended beyond playing the daf; his melodious voice led him to become a daf singer, performing in Beary, Malayalam, and Kannada languages.

Driven by his devotion, Muhammad composed a song in praise of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and began performing it at religious and cultural events across various cities like Mangalore, Bangalore, Puttur, Sullia, Hubli, and Sirsi. His captivating performances earned him special recognition from people and organizations in North Karnataka.

Muhammad’s contributions to the art of daf did not go unnoticed; he received honors from numerous social and religious organizations, including the Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy and the Bearys Welfare Association in Bangalore. His team also achieved success in daf competitions organized by various institutions.

For nearly 38 years, Muhammad immersed himself in the music of the daf until his passing on May 8, 2016, while passionately singing. He is survived by his wife Safia, two sons, and three daughters.
