Ismail Moodushedde

A Trailblazer in Tulu and Beary Cinema

Ismail Moodushedde, born on July 13, 1976, in Bolantur, near Kalladka in Bantwal Taluk, is a distinguished film director known for his significant contributions to Tulu and Beary cinema.

The son of the late S.M. Hameed Beary, a respected BMS bus conductor, and Alimamma, Ismail has carved a niche for himself in the realms of media, film, drama, and literature.

Early Life and Education

Ismail’s educational journey began at the Government Higher Primary School in Moodushedde, followed by St. Raymond’s High School in Vamanjoor. Despite his humble beginnings and high school education, his passion for the arts led him to pursue a career in film direction, where he has achieved remarkable success.

Achievements in Film and Literature

Ismail’s creative endeavors include authoring and directing six Tulu plays, such as “Aaseda Tudar,” “Alen Kaathondulle,” “Kaakaji Paadle,” “Mulluda Gulabi,” “Podige Aapundu,” and “Bus Baiji.” His dedication to literature is evident from his biography of Dr. Mohan Alva, titled “Mohan Raaga.” In 2022, his artistic Tulu film “Munni” was showcased at the Kolkata International Film Festival, earning critical acclaim.

Ismail has also made notable contributions to the telefilm industry, authoring and directing the bilingual Tulu and Beary telefilm “Sahana.” His other significant works include “Banna Bannada Baduku” (Kannada Film – Released in 2017), “Pammanna The Great” (Tulu Film – Released in 2018), “Bhojaraj M.B.B.S” (Tulu Film – Released in 2022), and “Mumbai to Bhatkal” (Kannada Film – Filming completed).

Career in Journalism

Since 1997, Ismail has served as a reporter and cinema writer for various Kannada magazines. In 2003, he took on the roles of editor, manager, and owner of the satirical magazine “Laathi Charge.” Additionally, he has worked as an editor for “I. Special News,” “Law & Order,” “Namma Bhoomi,” and “Samraat” magazines.

Contributions to Beary Community and Culture

Ismail’s dedication to the Beary community is evident through his literary contributions, including the first historical book in the Beary language, “Mysuru Pili Tippu,” published by his own Sania Publications. He has authored and directed six Beary plays, such as “Kunjali M.B.B.S,” “Birandar,” “Pokaraakogu Purushottile,” “Kaas Innaalleng Aarum Ille,” “Thaalolam Thaalolam,” and “Kaasimaakaro Pittal.”

He has also created and directed several Beary telefilms, including “Sandola” in 2009, “Sahana” in 2010, and “Kinaavu Kaanumbo” in 2012. From 2007 to 2011, Ismail organized numerous Beary cultural events through his own Sania Media in Mangalore.

Awards and Recognition

Ismail’s work has earned him several prestigious awards, including the Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy Honorary Award in the Arts Category for 2011-12, the Tulu Aayana Award for 2017, the Yuva Sadhana State Award from Sadhana Pratishthana for 2019, and the Mumbai Mulund Friends’ Harmony Award.

Future Plans

Looking ahead, Ismail Moodushedde aims to continue his journey as a film director with a special focus on directing a 100% comedy film in the Beary language.

His unwavering commitment to the arts and his community continues to inspire and pave the way for future generations.
