The reason many proudly identify as “Beary” today can be largely attributed to the establishment of “The Beary’s Welfare Association” in Bangalore about 35 years ago. M.M. Quraishi played a crucial role in uniting the Bearys in Bangalore, who were once hesitant to embrace the name.

Recognized as a great intellectual, thinker, author, entrepreneur, and social worker, M.M. Quraishi was the founder president of The Beary’s Welfare Association, Bangalore. He was born in Kundapur on November 14, 1928, to Manakhandi Ahmed and Latheefa. His full name was Manakhandi Musa Quraishi. He pursued his early education in Kundapur, Ullala, and Mangalore, and later graduated with a BA and MA in Economics from the University of Mumbai.

Quraishi began his career as a manager in the Yenepoy Group before transitioning into the business sector. He excelled as a timber merchant in Beerur and a gravel crusher businessman in Bangalore. He also ventured into the brewing industry in Kundapur and succeeded in the fish product, fish feed preparation, and fish fertilizer preparation industries.

Despite his business pursuits, Quraishi remained deeply committed to social causes. He was a talented writer, actively contributing to Dalit and minority movements, with many of his articles appearing in Dalits Voice magazine. He was known for his efforts in helping children secure scholarships and opportunities to study abroad. Recognizing the need for unity among Beary Muslims in Bangalore, he reached out to prominent community members and played a pivotal role in establishing The Beary’s Welfare Association. He served as its founder president and worked tirelessly for its development. Quraishi was also a mentor to numerous organizations across the country, including those in Bangalore.

After retiring from business, Quraishi moved from Bangalore to Brahmavar and later returned to Bangalore. He was a father of four sons and six daughters. His wife, Aisha, had predeceased him. On March 25, 2021, at the age of 93, M.M. Quraishi passed away from a heart attack at his home in Bangalore. His funeral prayers were performed at Ismail Seth Masjid in Frazer Town, Bangalore, and he was buried at Tannery Road Burial Ground.

ಈವತ್ತು ನಾವೆಲ್ಲಾ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆಯಿಂದ “ಬ್ಯಾರಿ” ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಸುಮಾರು 35 ವರ್ಷದ ಹಿಂದೆ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಥಾಪನೆಗೊಂಡ “ದಿ ಬ್ಯಾರೀಸ್ ವೆಲ್ಫೇರ್ ಅಸೋಸಿಯೇಶನ್” ಕಾರಣ ಎನ್ನಬಹುದು. “ಬ್ಯಾರಿ” ಎನ್ನಲು ಹಿಂಜರಿಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಆ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಬ್ಯಾರಿಗಳನ್ನು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಗ್ಗೂಡಿಸಿದ್ದ ಪ್ರಮುಖರಲ್ಲಿ ಎಂ.ಎಂ. ಖುರೈಶಿ ಕೂಡ ಒಬ್ಬರಾಗಿದ್ದರು.
ಹಿರಿಯ ಮೇಧಾವಿ, ಚಿಂತಕ, ಲೇಖಕ, ಉದ್ಯಮಿ, ಸಮಾಜ ಸೇವಕ ಎಂದೆಲ್ಲಾ ಗುರುತಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿದ್ದ ಎಂ.ಎಂ. ಖುರೈಶಿ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ದಿ ಬ್ಯಾರೀಸ್ ವೆಲ್ಫೇರ್ ಅಸೋಸಿಯೇಶನ್‌ನ ಸ್ಥಾಪಕ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಎಂಬ ಹಿರಿಮೆಗೆ ಪಾತ್ರರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಕುಂದಾಪುರದ ಮನಖಂಡಿ ಅಹ್ಮದ್-ಲತೀಫಾ ದಂಪತಿಯ ಪುತ್ರನಾಗಿ 1928ರ ನವೆಂಬರ್ 14ರಂದು ಕುಂದಾಪುರದಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದ್ದ ಮನಖಂಡಿ ಮೂಸಾ ಖುರೈಶಿ (ಎಂ.ಎಂ. ಖುರೈಶಿ) ಅವರು ಕುಂದಾಪುರ, ಉಳ್ಳಾಲ, ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದನೆ ತರಗತಿಯಿಂದ ದ್ವಿತೀಯ ಪಿಯುವರೆಗೆ ಕಲಿತರು. ಬಳಿಕ ಮುಂಬೈ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾನಿಲಯದಿಂದ ಬಿ.ಎ. ಪದವಿ ಮತ್ತು ಎಂ.ಎ. (ಅರ್ಥಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ) ಸ್ನಾತಕೋತ್ತರ ಪದವಿ ಪಡೆದರು.
ಯೆನೆಪೊಯ ಗ್ರೂಪ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥಾಪಕರಾಗಿ ವೃತ್ತಿ ಜೀವನ ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದ್ದ ಎಂ.ಎಂ. ಖುರೈಶಿ ಕೆಲವು ವರ್ಷದ ಬಳಿಕ ಉದ್ಯಮ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರು. ಹಾಗೇ ಬೀರೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮರದ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಯಾಗಿ, ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಜಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ರಶರ್ ಉದ್ಯಮಿಯಾಗಿ ಮಿಂಚಿದರು. ಕುಂದಾಪುರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ಸೋದ್ಯಮದಲ್ಲೂ ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರು. ಮೀನಿನ ಉತ್ಪನ್ನ, ಮೀನಿನ ಆಹಾರ ತಯಾರಿ, ಮೀನಿನ ರಸಗೊಬ್ಬರ ತಯಾರಿ ಉದ್ಯಮದಲ್ಲೂ ಯಶಸ್ಸು ಸಾಧಿಸಿದ್ದರು.

ಉದ್ಯಮಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಕೂಡ ಅವರು ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಕಳಕಳಿ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದರು. ಉತ್ತಮ ಬರಹಗಾರರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ದಲಿತ ಮತ್ತು ಅಲ್ಪಸಂಖ್ಯಾತರ ಚಳುವಳಿಯಲ್ಲೂ ಸಕ್ರಿಯರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಅವರ ಹಲವು ಲೇಖನಗಳು ದಲಿತ್ಸ್ ವಾಯ್ಸ್ ಪತ್ರಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರಂತರವಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ವೇತನ ದೊರಕಿಸಿಕೊಡಲು ಮತ್ತು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಕಲಿಕೆಗಾಗಿ ವಿದೇಶಕ್ಕೆ ತೆರಳಲು ನೆರವು ನೀಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಎಂ.ಎಂ. ಖುರೈಶಿ ಸಮಾಜ ಸೇವಕ ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಸಂಘಟಕರೂ ಆಗಿದ್ದರು. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿದ್ದ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಮರು ಸಂಘಟನೆಗೆ ಚಾಲನೆ ಕೊಡುವ ಸಿದ್ಧತೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರು. ಇದನ್ನು ಅರಿತುಕೊಂಡ ಎಂ.ಎಂ.ಖುರೈಶಿ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಮರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಂಪರ್ಕ ಸಾಧಿಸಿ ಅವರನ್ನು ಒಗ್ಗೂಡಿಸಿ ‘ದಿ ಬ್ಯಾರೀಸ್ ವೆಲ್ಫೇರ್ ಅಸೋಶಿಯೇಶನ್’ನ ಸ್ಥಾಪನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಪಾತ್ರ ವಹಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಅದರ ಸ್ಥಾಪಕ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿಯೂ ಕಾರ್ಯನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಸಂಘಟನೆಯ ಶ್ರೇಯಾಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಗೆ ಶಕ್ತಿಮೀರಿ ಶ್ರಮಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಸಹಿತ ನಾಡಿನ ಅನೇಕ ಸಂಘ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಅವರು ನುರಿತ ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶಕರಾಗಿದ್ದರು.

ಉದ್ಯಮ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಿಂದ ನಿವೃತ್ತಿ ಪಡೆದ ಬಳಿಕ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಿಂದ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾವರಕ್ಕೆ ಸ್ಥಳಾಂತರಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ಎಂ.ಎಂ. ಖುರೈಶಿ ಬಳಿಕ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿದ್ದರು. ನಾಲ್ಕು ಮಂದಿ ಪುತ್ರರು ಮತ್ತು ಆರು ಮಂದಿ ಪುತ್ರಿಯರ ತಂದೆಯಾಗಿದ್ದ ಎಂ.ಎಂ. ಖುರೈಶಿ ಅವರ ಪತ್ನಿ ಆಯಿಶಾ ಈ ಹಿಂದೆಯೇ ನಿಧನರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. 2021ರ ಮಾರ್ಚ್ 25ರಂದು ತನ್ನ 93ರ ಹರೆಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಎಂ.ಎಂ. ಖುರೈಶಿ ಹೃದಯಾಘಾತದಿಂದ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಸ್ವಗೃಹದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಧನರಾದರು. ಹಾಗೇ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಫ್ರಝರ್ ಟೌನ್‌ನ ಇಸ್ಮಾಯೀಲ್ ಸೇಠ್ ಮಸ್ಜಿದ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಮಯ್ಯತ್ ನಮಾರ್ ನೆರವೇರಿಸಿ ಟ್ಯಾನೆರಿ ರಸ್ತೆಯ ದಫನ ಭೂಮಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂತ್ಯಕ್ರಿಯೆ ನಡೆಸಲಾಯಿತು.
