Zakariya Jokatte Honoured with Karnataka Rajyotsava Award 2025

Mr. Zakariya Jokatte, founder of Al Muzain Company, Jubail, Saudi Arabia, has been honoured with the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award 2025–26 by the Department of Kannada and Culture, Government of Karnataka. He has been chosen under the Non-Resident Kannadiga (Overseas) category – a fitting tribute to a man whose life epitomizes determination, humility, and service.

Born on May 10, 1958, in Tokuru, Jokatte, to Haji B. Shekunhi and Khateejamma, Zakariya hails from a respected Guttu family. Despite his family’s heritage, his childhood was marked by hardship. The eldest among five siblings, he discontinued his studies after secondary school and began working early to support his family. His initial years were spent in small trades – selling jaggery, doing welding jobs, and working as a manual labourer carrying heavy loads.

In 1971, Zakariya joined Mangalore Harbour as a welding assistant, earning just ₹4 a day. Later, he worked as an office boy in a private firm before moving briefly to Mumbai. During the 1970s, when many from Dakshina Kannada migrated to the Gulf in search of a better life, Zakariya too nurtured the same dream. In 1978, he secured a visa to Saudi Arabia and began working in the construction sector. His job involved carrying cement bags up to 25 floors high – a test of sheer endurance that he met with unwavering resolve.

Zakariya’s honesty and work ethic soon opened new doors. He joined Mauric International Company, where his dedication earned him quick promotions. He also pursued a technical diploma to upgrade his skills. Later, he served 30 years with Al Habib Company, gaining rich experience across various industrial domains. These years of persistence laid the foundation for his future entrepreneurial journey.

In 2008, Zakariya founded Al Muzain Human Resource Company with just three employees, including his elder son, Zahir. What began as a small venture has grown into a large enterprise employing thousands of workers, many from Karnataka. Known for his humility, Zakariya is often seen wearing the same uniform as his employees and working alongside them – a gesture that has earned him deep respect from his workforce.

Beyond business success, Zakariya has been a lifeline for fellow Kannadigas in the Gulf, helping hundreds secure employment opportunities. Despite his global stature, he remains deeply connected to his homeland, supporting numerous educational, welfare, and charitable initiatives. He serves as Chairman of M. Friend Charitable Trust, Hidaya Foundation, and Zara Family Charity Trust, and contributes a substantial portion of his income to community welfare.

Following Al Muzain’s success, Zakariya expanded his business interests across Bahrain, the UAE, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, London, and India. His ventures now include educational institutions, notably an international school in Al Khobar established in collaboration with Yenepoya University. His forthcoming projects include a hospital, medical college, and initiatives in AI innovation and coastal development.

Zakariya resides in Bolar, Mangaluru, with his wife Hazra Zakariya and three sons – Zahir, Nazir, and Zahid – all of whom are engaged in business, religious, and philanthropic activities across countries. Through the Zara Charitable Foundation, he has extended aid to thousands of underprivileged individuals.

In February 2025, Zakariya served as Honorary Chairman of the Reception Committee for the World Kannada Cultural Convention held in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. His long list of honours includes the ‘Vishwamaanya Kannadiga’ (Global Distinguished Kannadiga) and ‘Star of Beary’ awards. His company, Al Muzain, has also received the RAMON Award from Energi Middle East for excellence in enterprise.

The Karnataka Rajyotsava Award will be presented by Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Siddaramaiah at a ceremony to be held tomorrow, November 1, 2025, at 6 PM. at Rabindra Kalakshetra, Bengaluru.
