B. Muhiyuddin (Moydin) Haji

1881 – 1967

Born in Bolara in 1881 to Chaiyabba and Pachumma, Muhiyuddin (Moydin) Haji Beary emerged as a prominent trader in the community. Despite minimal education and modest beginnings, Moydin Haji excelled in business with his acumen. His success led him to become one of the leading traders in Mangalore. Progressing steadily in the industry, he eventually owned more than 20 ships, facilitating the export of goods and materials from Mangalore to destinations like Mumbai, Lakshadweep, and Afghanistan. His reputation grew as he also imported materials from these regions, solidifying his position as a key figure in the trading sector.

Although born in Bolara, Muhiyuddin Haji Beary’s family had relocated to Bandar, Mangalore, making Bandar his primary place of business activities. He expanded his business ventures in Bandar itself. Muhiyuddin Haji first married Bipathumma from Tannirubavi, located on the outskirts of Mangalore. After her demise, he married Mariamma from Udyavara near Manjeshwar and also settled in Bengare region. He had two children with his first wife and seven children with his second wife, totaling nine children. Among them, B.M. Hasan Haji, Ahmad Haji Muhiyuddin, and Abdul Qader Haji distinguished themselves in various fields.

Despite being a prominent merchant and wealthy individual, Muhiyuddin Haji Beary was not affiliated with any political party. However, he was deeply involved in social welfare activities and was known for his philanthropy. Despite his limited formal education, he was encouraged by others to pursue further studies. He was known to assist those who approached him with their problems. Additionally, Muhiyuddin Haji owned significant land and buildings in Bandar and Kandak.

Moidin Haji, raised in a middle-class family, surpassed expectations in business through sheer determination. Always adorned in white attire, he possessed a striking presence with his attractive physique and white beard. Those who knew him recall his dignified demeanor and commanding presence, which earned him respect wherever he went.

Living for nearly 86 years, his remarkable success in the business world served as a beacon of inspiration for many. He passed away in 1967.
