1923 – 2006

Haji K. Muhammad, popularly known as “Fancy Haji,” was a prominent figure in Sulya Taluk, recognized by his shop’s name, “Fancy Fabrics.” Born in 1923 to the Moidu Kunhi-Bibi couple in Sulya, he played a significant role in the Indian freedom struggle, serving as the Sulya Taluk President of the Congress. He organized numerous pro-independence meetings in Sulya, raising awareness among the people and actively participating in the struggle himself.

By 1945, K. Muhammad had established a large textile shop near the Sulya bus stand, which became a bustling center of activity in Sulya Nagar. The wide corridor adjacent to his shop served as a resting place for market-goers. Known for his friendly demeanor, Fancy Haji was always ready to engage with people, inquire about their lives, and offer help to those in need.

He placed a strong emphasis on education and encouraged parents to send their children to school. He would often inquire about the educational progress of his customers’ children. In 1962, he played a crucial role in establishing a government primary school in Gandhinagar, Sulya town, and in 1983, he succeeded in getting it sanctioned. He remained a member of the school’s development committee until his death, dedicating his efforts to the school’s improvement.

Haji K. Muhammad, was deeply committed to community service and education. He actively participated in school meetings and provided necessary facilities to support the school’s growth. His involvement extended to several organizations, demonstrating his dedication to social and religious causes.

One of his contributions was persuading Ratnavarma Hegde to allocate land from Dharmasthala Moolageni for building the Juma Masjid in Gandhi Nagar, Sulya Nagar. Before this, residents had to travel 5 km from Sulya market to the nearest mosque. As the founder of Gandhinagar Masjid, he served as the Administrative Director and President for an impressive 53 years. He also played a role in the Dakshina Kannada District Waqf Advisory Committee.

K. Muhammad Haji was known for his generosity, donating several pieces of his family land for religious and social purposes. He co-founded the Ansarul Muslim Association, an organization renowned for its social, educational, and religious services in Sulya Taluk. The association now runs Yatim Khana, an English medium primary, and high school.

His dedication to public service also saw him elected as a Sulya municipal councilor for one term. As a member of the Sulya Taluk Land Justice Board, he was instrumental in allocating agricultural land to many poor people by effectively implementing the ‘Plowman Owns Land’ law introduced by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

He served as the President of the Sulya Taluk Traders Association, highlighting his leadership in the local business community. Additionally, he was the President of the Rotary Club and Vice President of the Dakshina Kannada District Textile Traders Association.

Highly respected across religious lines in Sulya, Fancy Muhammad Haji shared close ties with notable figures such as Kurunji Venkataramana Gowda, the founder of modern Sulya, and Balakrishna Gowda, another influential figure in the area. He was also associated with writers Niranjan and Anupama, actively contributing to literary activities in the region.

He was a schoolmate of Kurunji Venkataramana Gowda and played a pivotal role in promoting education in his community. His emphasis on education was evident in his family, where all his sons graduated and daughters completed SSLC in the 1970s. Today, his grandchildren have excelled in higher studies and hold senior positions in central and state governments, as well as in prestigious institutions abroad.

A significant event in his life was performing Hajj in 1975, a journey that held deep personal meaning for him. Fancy Muhammad Haji passed away on June 24, 2006, at the age of 83, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, community service, and a profound commitment to education and social welfare in Sulya.

ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಪ್ರೇಮಿ, ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ ಹೋರಾಟಗಾರ ಫ್ಯಾನ್ಸಿ ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಹಾಜಿ ಸುಳ್ಯ

ಸುಳ್ಯ ತಾಲೂಕು ಕಂಡ ಮುತ್ಸದ್ದಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬರಾದ ಹಾಜಿ ಕೆ. ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ “ಫ್ಯಾನ್ಸಿ ಹಾಜಿ” ಎಂದೇ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧರು. ತನ್ನ ಬಟ್ಟೆ ಅಂಗಡಿಗೆ “ಫ್ಯಾನ್ಸಿ ಫೆಬ್ರಿಕ್ಸ್” ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿದ್ದ ಕಾರಣ ಅವರು “ಫ್ಯಾನ್ಸಿ” ಹೆಸರಿನಿಂದಲೇ ಗುರುತಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿದ್ದರು.
ಸುಳ್ಯದ ಮೊಯಿದು ಕುಂಞಿ-ಬೀಬಿ ದಂಪತಿಯ ಪುತ್ರನಾಗಿ 1923ರಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದ ಕೆ. ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಅವರು ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ ಹೋರಾಟದ ಸಂದರ್ಭ ಅಂದಿನ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್‌ನ ಸುಳ್ಯ ತಾಲೂಕು ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಸುಳ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯದ ಪರ ಹಲವು ಸಭೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸಂಘಟಿಸಿ, ಜನರಲ್ಲಿ ಜಾಗೃತಿ ಮೂಡಿಸಿ, ಸ್ವತಃ ಹೋರಾಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಲ್ಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು.

1945ರ ವೇಳೆಗೆ ಸುಳ್ಯ ಬಸ್ ನಿಲ್ದಾಣದ ಸಮೀಪ ದೊಡ್ಡದಾದ ಜವಳಿ ಮಳಿಗೆಯನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದರು. ಅವರ ಈ ಜವಳಿ ಅಂಗಡಿಯು ಸುಳ್ಯ ನಗರದ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಗಳ ಕೇಂದ್ರಬಿಂದುವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಸುಳ್ಯ ಪೇಟೆಗೆ ಬಂದವರಿಗೆ ಈ ಅಂಗಡಿಯ ಮುಂದಿನ ವಿಶಾಲ ಹಜಾರವು ವಿಶ್ರಾಂತಿ ತಾಣದಂತಿತ್ತು. ಬಂದವರನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ನಗುಮುಖದಿಂದಲೇ ಮಾತನಾಡಿಸಿ, ಕಷ್ಟ ಸುಖ ವಿಚಾರಿಸಿ, ಅಗತ್ಯ ಇದ್ದವರಿಗೆ ನೆರವು ನೀಡುವ ಗುಣವನ್ನು ಫ್ಯಾನ್ಸಿ ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಹಾಜಿ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದರು. ಶಿಕ್ಷಣಕ್ಕೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಒತ್ತು ನೀಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಶಾಲೆಗೆ ಸೇರಿಸಲು ಆದ್ಯತೆ ನೀಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ತಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಬಂದ ಗ್ರಾಹಕರಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲೇ ವಿಚಾರಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. 1962ರಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಳ್ಯ ಪೇಟೆಯ ಗಾಂಧಿನಗರದಲ್ಲಿ ಸರಕಾರಿ ಪ್ರಾಥಮಿಕ ಮತ್ತು 1983ರಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರೌಢಶಾಲೆಯ ಸ್ಥಾಪನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಹತ್ವದ ಪಾತ್ರ ವಹಿಸಿ ಅದನ್ನು ಮಂಜೂರು ಮಾಡಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಅದೇ ಶಾಲೆಯ ಶಾಲಾಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಸಮಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಜೀವಿತದ ಕೊನೆಯವರೆಗೂ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾಗಿ ಶಾಲೆಯ ಉನ್ನತಿಗೆ ಶ್ರಮಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಶಾಲೆಯ ಸಭೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಕ್ರಿಯವಾಗಿ ಪಾಲ್ಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಶಾಲೆಗೆ ಬೇಕಾದ ಸೌಲಭ್ಯಗಳಿಗೆ ನೆರವು ನೀಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಹಲವಾರು ಸಂಘ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಸಕ್ರಿಯವಾಗಿ ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು. ಸುಳ್ಯ ನಗರದ ಗಾಂಧಿನಗರದಲ್ಲಿ ಜುಮಾ ಮಸೀದಿಯನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲು ಧರ್ಮಸ್ಥಳ ಮೂಲಗೇಣಿಯ ಜಮೀನನ್ನು ರತ್ನವರ್ಮ ಹೆಗಡೆಯವರ ಮನವೊಲಿಸಿ ಪಡೆದುಕೊಂಡರು. ಅದುವರೆಗೆ ಸುಳ್ಯ ಪೇಟೆಯಿಂದ 5 ಕಿ.ಮೀ. ದೂರದ ಮೊಗರ್ಪಣೆಗೆ ಮಸೀದಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಬೇಕಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಗಾಂಧಿನಗರ ಮಸೀದಿಯ ಸ್ಥಾಪಕರಾಗಿ ನಿರಂತರ 53 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಆಡಳಿತ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರಾಗಿ, ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲಾ ವಕ್ಫ್ ಸಲಹಾ ಸಮಿತಿ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾಗಿಯೂ ಕಾರ್ಯನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಿದ್ದರು.
ಕೆ. ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಹಾಜಿ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಹಾಗೂ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಉದ್ದೇಶಗಳಿಗಾಗಿ ತನ್ನ ಕುಟುಂಬದ ಹಲವಾರು ಜಮೀನುಗಳನ್ನು ದಾನ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರು. ಸುಳ್ಯ ತಾಲೂಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ, ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ರಂಗಗಳ ಸೇವೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಖ್ಯಾತಿ ಪಡೆದಿರುವ ಅನ್ಸಾರುಲ್ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಮೀನ್ ಅಸೋಸಿಯೇಶನ್ ಎಂಬ ಸಂಘಟನೆಯ ಸ್ಥಾಪಕರಲ್ಲಿ ಓರ್ವರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಇಂದು ಈ ಸಂಘಟನೆಯು ಯತೀಂ ಖಾನಾ, ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮದ ಪ್ರಾಥಮಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರೌಢಶಾಲೆಯನ್ನು ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿದೆ.
ಸುಳ್ಯ ಪುರಸಭೆ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾಗಿ ಒಂದು ಅವಧಿಗೆ ಆಯ್ಕೆಯಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಸುಳ್ಯ ತಾಲೂಕು ಭೂನ್ಯಾಯ ಮಂಡಳಿ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಕೆ. ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಹಾಜಿ ಅಂದಿನ ಪ್ರಧಾನಿ ಇಂದಿರಾ ಗಾಂಧಿ ಜಾರಿಗೆ ತಂದಿದ್ದ “ಉಳುವವನೇ ಭೂ ಒಡೆಯ’ ಕಾನೂನನ್ನು ಪರಿಣಾಮಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ಜಾರಿಗೊಳಿಸಿ, ಹಲವಾರು ಬಡವರಿಗೆ ಕೃಷಿ ಭೂಮಿ ಮಂಜೂರುಗೊಳಿಸಲು ಕಾರಣಕರ್ತರಾಗಿದ್ದರು.
ಸುಳ್ಯ ತಾಲೂಕು ವರ್ತಕರ ಸಂಘದ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಫ್ಯಾನ್ಸಿ ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಹಾಜಿ ರೋಟರಿ ಕ್ಲಬ್‌ನ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ, ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲಾ ಜವಳಿ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಸ್ಥರ ಸಂಘದ ಉಪಾಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ್ದರು.
ಸುಳ್ಯದ ಸರ್ವಧರ್ಮ ಬಾಂಧವರಿಂದಲೂ ಗೌರವಿಸಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಫ್ಯಾನ್ಸಿ ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಹಾಜಿ ಆಧುನಿಕ ಸುಳ್ಯದ ನಿರ್ಮಾತೃ ಕುರುಂಜಿ ವೆಂಕಟರಮಣ ಗೌಡ, ಸುಳ್ಯದ ಮತ್ತೋರ್ವ ಮುತ್ಸದ್ದಿ ಬಾಲಕೃಷ್ಣ ಗೌಡ ಅವರ ಶಾಲಾ ಸಹಪಾಠಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಸಾಹಿತಿಗಳಾದ ನಿರಂಜನ, ಅನುಪಮ ಅವರೊಂದಿಗೂ ಒಡನಾಟ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಹಲವು ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಪರ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಕಾರಣರಾಗಿದ್ದರು.

1975ರಲ್ಲಿ ಹಡಗಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹಜ್ ಯಾತ್ರೆಗೈದಿದ್ದ ಹಾಜಿ ಕೆ. ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಫ್ಯಾನ್ಸಿ ಅವರಿಗೆ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಮಂದಿ ಪುತ್ರಿಯರು ಹಾಗೂ ಐವರು ಪುತ್ರರಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಪುತ್ರರೆಲ್ಲರೂ ಪದವೀಧರಾಗಿರುವುದು ಹಾಗೂ ಪುತ್ರಿಯರೆಲ್ಲಾ 70ರ ದಶಕದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಎಸೆಸೆಲ್ಸಿ ಪೂರ್ತಿಗೊಳಿಸಿರುವುದು ಗಮನಾರ್ಹವಾಗಿದೆ. ಫ್ಯಾನ್ಸಿ ಮುಹಮ್ಮದರು ಶಿಕ್ಷಣಕ್ಕೆ ಒತ್ತು ನೀಡಿರುವುದು ಅವರ ಕುಟುಂಬದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಪ್ರತಿಫಲಿಸಿದೆ. ಇಂದು ಅವರ ಮೊಮ್ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಉನ್ನತ ವ್ಯಾಸಂಗ ಮಾಡಿ, ಕೇಂದ್ರ-ರಾಜ್ಯ ಸರಕಾರದ ಹಿರಿಯ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳಾಗಿ, ವೈದ್ಯರಾಗಿ, ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರ್‌ಗಳಾಗಿ, ವಿದೇಶದ ಉನ್ನತ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಉದ್ಯೋಗದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಫ್ಯಾನ್ಸಿ ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಹಾಜಿ ತನ್ನ 83ನೇ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂದರೆ 2006ರ ಜೂನ್ 24ರಂದು ನಿಧನರಾದರು.
