1930 –

Throughout history, many people from Dakshina Kannada district moved to Kodagu district in search of work, eventually settling there and contributing significantly to its development. One such individual is GM Habib, renowned as the first Beary lawyer of Kodagu district.

Goltamajalu Muhammad Habib, known as GM Habib, was born in 1930 in Goltamajalu, near Kalladka of Bantwala taluk, to G. Moidin Beary and Thajbi. Despite his relatively short life of 55 years, his accomplishments were notable and largely achieved outside his home district.

Habib’s father, Moidin Beary, was a prominent road and bridge construction contractor during British rule. Together with his five brothers, he led a team of around 200 laborers, becoming a major contractor known for building roads and bridges in the Mangalore-Kodagu region. Although their ancestral home was in Goltamajalu, Moidin Beary built a house in Kodlipet, Somwarpet taluk of Kodagu district, to facilitate their work.

Moidin Beary’s son, GM Habib, pursued his early education in schools in BC Road and later completed his PUC and BCom degrees at Government College, Mangalore. Despite already holding a BCom degree, he aspired to earn a BA and enrolled in a government college in Madikeri.

During this time, Mamu Beary, a notable beedi seller in Madikeri, noticed Habib’s intelligence and distinguished appearance. Recognizing his potential, Mamu Beary admitted Habib to Lakshman Gowda Law College in Belgaum, with the hope of making him his son-in-law. Habib successfully completed his law studies and became the first Beary lawyer in Kodagu district.

Habib married Mamu Beary’s daughter, Beafatima, and the couple settled in Madikeri. They had six sons and four daughters. After Beafatima’s passing, Habib married a widow named Halima, with whom he had six more sons and one daughter. Habib’s descendants are now settled in various places, including Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada district. Both of Habib’s wives, Beafatima and Halima, have also passed away.

After earning his law degree, GM Habib began his career as the Treasurer of the then Coorg Government. Alongside his role as a tax lawyer, he was actively involved in political, religious, educational, and social spheres. He served as the president of Badria Juma Masjid in Madikeri for many years and was a founding member of the Coorg District Muslim Association. Deeply valuing education, he supported many children in their educational pursuits.

Habib’s political involvement included being a member of the State Committee of the Muslim League. In 1965, he served as a member and vice president of the Madikeri Municipal Council. Identified with the Reddy Congress, he garnered attention by running for the state assembly against former chief minister R. Gundu Rao.

Throughout his career, Habib built strong connections with several prominent politicians, including AM Belliyappa, AK Subbaiah, MC Nanaiah, Jeevijaya, BA Moidin, UT Fareed, BM Idinabba, KM Ibrahim, and BA Hasanabba.

Renowned for his stance against injustice, illegality, and unrighteousness, Habib earned the title “Habib Lawyer” throughout Kodagu. Known for his compassion towards the poor, he never turned away anyone in need. During times when poor families could not afford gold jewelry for weddings, Habib would generously lend his wife’s jewelry to the brides, often not asking for it back until they could afford to return it.

ಕೊಡಗು ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಪ್ರಪ್ರಥಮ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ನ್ಯಾಯವಾದಿ ಜಿ.ಎಂ. ಹಬೀಬ್ ಮಡಿಕೇರಿ

ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯಿಂದ ಕೆಲಸ ಅರಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಕೊಡಗು ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಗೆ ಹೋದ ಅನೇಕ ಮಂದಿ ಅಲ್ಲೇ ನೆಲೆನಿಂತು, ಆ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಗೆ ಕೀರ್ತಿ ತಂದ ಇತಿಹಾಸವಿದೆ. ಈ ಪೈಕಿ ಜಿ.ಎಂ.ಹಬೀಬ್ ಕೂಡ ಒಬ್ಬರು. ಕೊಡಗು ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಪ್ರಪ್ರಥಮ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ನ್ಯಾಯವಾದಿ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಗ್ಗಳಿಕೆಗೆ, ಕೀರ್ತಿಗೆ ಅವರು ಪಾತ್ರರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಬಂಟ್ವಾಳ ತಾಲೂಕಿನ ಕಲ್ಲಡ್ಕ ಸಮೀಪದ ಗೋಳ್ತಮಜಲು ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿನ ಜಿ. ಮೊಯ್ದಿನ್ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ-ತಾಜ್‌ಬಿ ದಂಪತಿಯ ಮಗನಾಗಿ 1930ರಲ್ಲಿ ಗೋಳ್ತಮಜಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದ್ದ ಜಿ.ಎಂ.ಹಬೀಬ್ (ಗೋಳ್ತಮಜಲು ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಹಬೀಬ್) ಬದುಕಿದ್ದು ಕೇವಲ 55 ವರ್ಷ. ಆದರೆ, ತನ್ನ ಜೀವಿತಾವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಮಾಡಿದ ಸಾಧನೆ ಅಪಾರ. ಅದೂ ತವರು ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದು ಗಮನಾರ್ಹ.

ಮೊಯ್ದಿನ್ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷ್ ಆಡಳಿತದಲ್ಲಿ ರಸ್ತೆ-ಸೇತುವೆ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣದ ಗುತ್ತಿಗೆದಾರರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಅವರು ತನ್ನ ಐದು ಮಂದಿ ಸಹೋದರರ ಜೊತೆಗೂಡಿ ತನ್ನದೇ ಆದ ಸುಮಾರು 200 ಮಂದಿ ಕೂಲಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಕಾರ್ಮಿಕರನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡ ತಂಡವೊಂದನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊಂಡು ಮಂಗಳೂರು-ಕೊಡಗು ಸಹಿತ ನಾನಾ ಕಡೆ ರಸ್ತೆ-ಸೇತುವೆ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಗುತ್ತಿಗೆದಾರ ಎಂದು ಗುರುತಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು. ಗೋಳ್ತಮಜಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಹಿರಿಯರ ಮನೆಯಿದ್ದರೂ ಕೂಡ ಕೆಲಸ-ಕಾರ್ಯದ ನಿಮಿತ್ತ ಮೊಯ್ದಿನ್ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಕೊಡಗು ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಸೋಮವಾರಪೇಟೆ ತಾಲೂಕಿನ ಕೊಡ್ಲಿಪೇಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಮನೆ ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಿದ್ದರು.

ಮೊಯ್ದಿನ್ ಬ್ಯಾರಿಯ ಪುತ್ರ ಜಿ.ಎಂ. ಹಬೀಬ್ ಪ್ರಾಥಮಿಕ, ಪ್ರೌಢ ತರಗತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿ.ಸಿ. ರೋಡ್‌ನ ಶಾಲೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕಲಿತರೆ, ಪಿಯುಸಿ ಮತ್ತು ಬಿಕಾಂ ಪದವಿಯನ್ನು ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಸರಕಾರಿ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪಡೆದರು. ಬಿಕಾಂ ಪದವಿ ಪಡೆದರೂ ಬಿ.ಎ. ಪದವಿ ಪಡೆಯಬೇಕು ಎಂಬ ಆಸೆಯಿಂದ ಮಡಿಕೇರಿಯ ಸರಕಾರಿ ಕಾಲೇಜಿಗೆ ಸೇರಿದರು. ಸುಂದರ ಮೈಕಟ್ಟಿನ, ನಾಲ್ಕು ಮಂದಿಯ ಮಧ್ಯೆ ಎದ್ದು ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಹಬೀಬ್ ಅವರ ಚಾಕಚಕ್ಯತೆಯನ್ನು ಅಂದಿನ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಬೀಡಿ ಮಾರಾಟಗಾರರಲ್ಲಿ ಓರ್ವರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಮಡಿಕೇರಿಯ ಮಾಮು ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಗುರುತಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರು. ಹಾಗೇ ಹಬೀಬ್ ಅವರನ್ನು ಪರಿಚಯ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ತನ್ನ ಅಳಿಯನನ್ನಾಗಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂಬ ಇರಾದೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಕಾನೂನು ಕಲಿಯಲು ಬೆಳಗಾವಿಯ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣಗೌಡ ಕಾನೂನು ಕಾಲೇಜಿಗೆ ಸೇರಿಸಿದರು. ಕೊಡಗು ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಪ್ರಪ್ರಥಮ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ನ್ಯಾಯವಾದಿಯಾಗಿ ಹೊರಹೊಮ್ಮಿದ ಹಬೀಬ್ ಅವರಿಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಮಗಳು ಬೀಫಾತಿಮಾ ಅವರನ್ನು ಮಾಮು ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಮದುವೆ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಟ್ಟರು. ಆ ಬಳಿಕ ಮಡಿಕೇರಿಯಲ್ಲೇ ನೆಲೆನಿಂತ ಹಬೀಬ್ ಅವರು ಬೀಫಾತಿಮಾರ ಮೂಲಕ ಆರು ಮಂದಿ ಪುತ್ರರು ಮತ್ತು ನಾಲ್ಕು ಮಂದಿ ಪುತ್ರಿಯರು ಹಾಗೂ ಬೀಫಾತಿಮಾರ ನಿಧನದ ಬಳಿಕ ವಿಧವೆ ಹಲೀಮಾರನ್ನು ಮದುವೆಯಾಗುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಆರು ಮಂದಿ ಪುತ್ರರು ಮತ್ತು ಒಬ್ಬ ಪುತ್ರಿಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆದರು. ಈಗ ಈ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಕೊಡಗು, ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ ಸಹಿತ ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಕಡೆ ನೆಲೆಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಹಬೀಬ್ ಅವರ ಪತ್ನಿಯರಾದ ಬೀಫಾತಿಮಾ ಮತ್ತು ಹಲೀಮಾ ಕೂಡ ಇಹಲೋಕ ತ್ಯಜಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಕಾನೂನು ಪದವಿ ಪಡೆದ ಹಬೀಬ್ ಅಂದಿನ ಕೂರ್ಗ್ ಸರಕಾರದ ಖಜಾನಾಧಿಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯ ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದರು. ತೆರಿಗೆ ವಕೀಲರಾಗಿಯೂ ಕಾರ್ಯನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಿದ್ದ ಹಬೀಬ್ ವೃತ್ತಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ರಾಜಕೀಯ, ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ, ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕ, ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲೂ ಸಕ್ರಿಯರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಮಡಿಕೇರಿಯ ಬದ್ರಿಯಾ ಜುಮಾ ಮಸೀದಿಯ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ ಹಲವು ವರ್ಷ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಕೂರ್ಗ್ ಡಿಸ್ಟ್ರಿಕ್ಟ್ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಂ ಅಸೋಸಿಯೇಶನ್‌ನ ಸ್ಥಾಪಕ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಶಿಕ್ಷಣಕ್ಕೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಆದ್ಯತೆ ನೀಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಅನೇಕ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಕಲಿಯಲು ನೆರವಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ರಾಜಕೀಯವಾಗಿ ಸಕ್ರಿಯರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಮುಸ್ಲಿಂ ಲೀಗ್‌ನ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಸಮಿತಿಯ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. 1965ರಲ್ಲಿ ಮಡಿಕೇರಿ ಪುರಸಭೆಯ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾಗಿ, ಉಪಾಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ ಕಾರ್ಯನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ರೆಡ್ಡಿ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ ಜೊತೆ ಗುರುತಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಮಾಜಿ ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿ ಆರ್. ಗುಂಡೂರಾವ್ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ರಾಜ್ಯ ವಿಧಾನಸಭೆಗೆ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧಿಸಿ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆದಿದ್ದರು.
ಪ್ರಮುಖ ರಾಜಕಾರಣಿಗಳಾದ ಎ.ಎಂ. ಬೆಳ್ಳಿಯಪ್ಪ, ಎ.ಕೆ. ಸುಬ್ಬಯ್ಯ, ಎಂ.ಸಿ. ನಾಣಯ್ಯ, ಜೀವಿಜಯ, ಬಿ.ಎ. ಮೊಯ್ದಿನ್, ಯು.ಟಿ. ಫರೀದ್, ಬಿ.ಎಂ. ಇದಿನಬ್ಬ, ಕೆ.ಎಂ. ಇಬ್ರಾಹೀಂ, ಬಿ.ಎ. ಹಸನಬ್ಬ ಮತ್ತಿತರರ ಜೊತೆ ನಿಕಟ ಸಂಪರ್ಕ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದರು.

ಅನ್ಯಾಯ, ಅಕ್ರಮ, ಅನೀತಿಯ ಜೊತೆ ಎಂದೂ ರಾಜಿ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳದ ಹಬೀಬ್ ಅವರು ಕೊಡಗಿನಾದ್ಯಂತ “ಹಬೀಬ್ ಲಾಯರ್” ಎಂದೇ ಚಿರಪರಿಚಿತರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಬಡಬಗ್ಗರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತೀವ್ರ ಕಾಳಜಿ ವಹಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಹಬೀಬ್ ಅವರು ಮನೆಬಾಗಿಲಿಗೆ ಬರುವ ಯಾರನ್ನೂ ಬರಿಗೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದವರಲ್ಲ. ಹಿಂದಿನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಡವರು ಮದುವೆಗೆ ಚಿನ್ನಾಭರಣ ಖರೀದಿಸುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆವಾಗ ಹಬೀಬ್ ತನ್ನ ಪತ್ನಿಯ ಚಿನ್ನಾಭರಣವನ್ನು ಮದುಮಗಳಿಗೆ ನೀಡಲು ಪ್ರೇರೇಪಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಕನಿಷ್ಠ ಮೂರು ತಿಂಗಳವರೆಗೆ ಬಡವರು ಆ ಚಿನ್ನಾಭರಣವನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಮರಳಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದುದು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಅವರು ಕೊಡುವವರೆಗೆ ಹಬೀಬ್ ಅಥವಾ ಅವರ ಪತ್ನಿ ಬೀಫಾತಿಮಾ ಅದನ್ನು ಮರಳಿ ಕೇಳುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬ ಮಾತು ಈಗಲೂ ಮಡಿಕೇರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇಳಿ ಬರುತ್ತಿವೆ.
