M.B. Abdul Rahman

Former President - Karnataka Beary Sahithya Academy

M.B. Abdul Rahman, a renowned lawyer from Mangalore, was born on June 15, 1944, in Mata near Uppinangady. He belonged to a respected landowning family, being the son of Zamindar M.B. Yusuf and Fathima.

Rahman began his education at Uppinangady Government School, where he completed his schooling and matriculation. He then pursued his Pre-University Course (PUC) at St Aloysius College in Mangalore. Following this, he graduated from Maharaja’s College in Mysore and later earned his LLB from Government Law College in Bangalore.

M.B. Abdul Rahman started his legal career in Mangalore and continues to serve as a Notary. He has made significant contributions as a member of the syndicate and Board of Studies at Mangalore University, director of Netravathi Grameen Bank, and vice-president of the District Waqf Committee. Additionally, he has served as a legal advisor to several nationalized banks, including Syndicate Bank, Canara Bank, and Vijaya Bank.

Rahman made a significant impact on blood donation in Mangalore by founding the ‘Blood Brain Biome Banking Trust (R)’. His dedication to society is evident through his work as a founding member of the trust and as president of Kendra Beary Sahitya Parishath. He also took the initiative to gather information on all unregistered mosques in the district, personally contacted the presidents of these jama’aths, and successfully registered hundreds of mosques under the Waqf Board at no cost.

M.B. Abdul Rahman is also an accomplished writer. He authored a collection of real-life stories titled ‘Bidugadeya Dari’, which received several prestigious awards in 2006, including the ‘Muslim Sahitya Prashasthi’ from the Muslim Writers Association, the ‘Lankesh Prashasthi’ from Shivamogga Karnataka Sangha, and the ‘Modala Kannadiga’ award from Sharjah Karnataka Sangha.

In recognition of his significant contributions to blood donation on both national and international levels, the Karnataka State Government honored him with the ‘Rajyotsava Award’ in 2003. Additionally, in 2000, the DK District Health Department honored him for organizing outstanding blood donation camps and AIDS awareness programs.

Rahman’s service extended beyond social sectors; he also served as the custodian of Masjid-e-Noor in Hampankatta for several years. His influence grew when the Government of Karnataka met the long-standing demand of coastal Muslims by establishing the ‘Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy’ on February 5, 2009. Rahman was appointed the founding president, and in this role, he made significant contributions to the academy’s growth and development. His impact as the president of Kendra Beary Sahitya Parishath and as an executive member of the Karnataka Muslim Writers Association continues to be felt in the community.

M.B. Abdul Rahman married Fathima B S, the daughter of B S Abubakar and Khathijamma from Bayal in Suralpady. They have three children: a son named Asif Rahman and two daughters, Vaheeda Rahman and Shahida Rahman.

Even in his old age, Abdul Rahman remains active in social and community work. His numerous achievements continue to inspire many.
