1944 – 2019

Muhammad Maripalla was born in 1944 in Pudu village Maripalla, into a family where literary pursuits were not the norm. His parents, Ismail and Nafisa, faced financial challenges, which limited Muhammad’s formal education to the 7th standard at the local government school. Despite these obstacles, Muhammad developed a deep passion for literature during his school days. Initially supporting himself through a small grocery shop and later selling bulbs, he eventually turned to his love for poetry and singing.

Muhammad’s journey into literature and folk artistry was driven by his own determination. He began composing poems and songs, finding his voice in the world of music. Realizing the power of art to transcend economic barriers, he pursued a career in singing and poetry. He traveled extensively across Dakshina Kannada district, visiting over 135 schools to conduct literary workshops. Through his performances, which included folk songs, lyrical compositions, and songs on social issues like child labor and environmental conservation, Muhammad raised awareness and promoted societal change.

His musical programs, blending original poetry with folk melodies, resonated deeply with audiences. For nearly two decades, he served as an artist in the publicity department, using his talents to inform the public about government initiatives and development programs through poetry and music. In recognition of his contributions to folk culture, Muhammad was appointed as a member of the Karnataka Janapada Academy.

Muhammad Maripalla also played a significant role in promoting the Beary language and culture. He sang Beary folk songs at weddings, mehndi ceremonies, and various cultural events, contributing to the preservation and enrichment of Beary traditions. He actively participated in poetry conferences organized by Kannada and Beary literary organizations, further solidifying his place as a respected figure in both communities.

Throughout his career, Muhammad received numerous accolades, including the 2010 Karnataka Beary Sahitya Akademi Honorary Award and the Veera Rani Abbakka Award, recognizing his cultural contributions and literary achievements.

In his personal life, Muhammad faced challenges, including the loss of his first wife. He remarried and was blessed with a large family, comprising six daughters and five sons from his two marriages.

Muhammad Maripalla’s journey came to a peaceful close on December 24, 2019. His legacy as a poet, singer, and cultural ambassador continues to inspire and enrich the literary and folk traditions of Karnataka.

ಜಾನಪದ ಕಲಾವಿದ ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಮಾರಿಪಳ್ಳ

ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ಅಭಿರುಚಿಯೇ ಇಲ್ಲದ ಕುಟುಂಬದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿ ಬೆಳೆದಿದ್ದ ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಮಾರಿಪಳ್ಳ ಅವರು ತನ್ನ ಪರಿಶ್ರಮದಿಂದ ಸ್ವತಃ ಕವನ, ಹಾಡುಗಳನ್ನು ರಚಿಸಿ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಸ್ವರ ನೀಡುವುದು ಮತ್ತು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಜಾನಪದ ಅಕಾಡಮಿಯ ಸದಸ್ಯತ್ವ ಪಡೆಯುವುದು ಸಣ್ಣ ವಿಷಯವಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಬಡತನಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ-ಕಲೆ ಅಡ್ಡಿಯಾಗದು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಮಾರಿಪಳ್ಳ ಸಾಧಿಸಿ ತೋರಿಸಿದ್ದರು.

ಮಾರಿಪಳ್ಳದ ಇಸ್ಮಾಯೀಲ್-ನಫೀಸಾ ದಂಪತಿಯ ಪುತ್ರನಾಗಿ 1944ರಲ್ಲಿ ಪುದು ಗ್ರಾಮದ ಮಾರಿಪಳ್ಳ ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದ ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಊರಿನ ಸರಕಾರಿ ಶಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ 7ನೆ ತರಗತಿ ಕಲಿತರು. ಆರ್ಥಿಕ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಯಿಂದ ವಿದ್ಯಾಭ್ಯಾಸ ಮುಂದುವರಿಸಲು ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಸಣ್ಣ ದಿನಸಿ ಅಂಗಡಿ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಕೆಲಕಾಲ ಬಲ್ಬ್‌ಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾರಾಟ ಮಾಡಿ ಬದುಕು ಸಾಗಿಸತೊಡಗಿದ್ದರು. ಶಾಲಾ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲೇ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ಅಭಿರುಚಿ ಬೆಳೆಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಕವನಗಳನ್ನು ರಚಿಸಿ, ಸ್ವತ: ಹಾಡ ತೊಡಗಿದ್ದರು. ವ್ಯಾಪಾರ ಕೈ ಹಿಡಿಯದಿದ್ದಾಗ ಹಾಡುವುದನ್ನೇ ವೃತ್ತಿಯಾಗಿಸಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸಿದರು. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ 135ಕ್ಕೂ ಅಧಿಕ ಶಾಲೆಗಳಿಗೆ ತೆರಳಿ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಕಾರ್ಯಾಗಾರ ನಡೆಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟರು. ಚುಟುಕು, ಕವನ ವಾಚಿಸಿ, ಜಾನಪದ ಹಾಡುಗಳನ್ನು ಹಾಡಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಜಾಗೃತಿ ಮೂಡಿಸತೊಡಗಿದರು. ಬಾಲ ಕಾರ್ಮಿಕ, ಪರಿಸರ, ನೈರ್ಮಲ್ಯ ವಿಷಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಜಾನಪದ ಹಾಡು, ಭಾವಗೀತೆ, ಸೌಹಾರ್ದ ಗೀತೆ, ಶಾಂತಿ ಗೀತೆ, ಕ್ರಾಂತಿ ಗೀತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹಾಡುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಸಮಾಜದಲ್ಲಿ ಜಾಗೃತಿ ಮೂಡಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಸ್ವರಚಿತ ಕವನಗಳನ್ನು ರಚಿಸಿ ಜನಪದ ಹಿನ್ನಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಗಾಯನದ ಮೂಲಕ ಅವರು ನೀಡಿದ್ದ ಸಂಗೀತ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಗಳು ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಕರ ಮೆಚ್ಚುಗೆಗೆ ಪಾತ್ರವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ವಾರ್ತಾ ಇಲಾಖೆಯ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಪ್ರಚಾರ ವಿಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಮಾರು 20 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಲಾವಿದರಾಗಿ ಗುರುತಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ಸರಕಾರದ ಯೋಜನೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಕವನ ರಚಿಸಿ ಸಂಗೀತದ ಮೂಲಕ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಅರಿವು ಮೂಡಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಅವರ ಸೇವೆಯನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸಿ ಸರಕಾರವು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಜಾನಪದ ಅಕಾಡಮಿಯ ಸದಸ್ಯರನ್ನಾಗಿ ನೇಮಕಗೊಳಿಸಿತ್ತು. ಅವರ ಅನೇಕ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ, ಕನ್ನಡ ಕವನಗಳು ವಿವಿಧ ಪತ್ರಿಕೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಗಿವೆ. ಕರಾವಳಿ ಉತ್ಸವದಂತಹ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ವೇದಿಕೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕೂಡ ಅವರು ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮ ನೀಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಬ್ಯಾರಿಗಳ ಮದುವೆ, ಮೆಹಂದಿ ಮತ್ತಿತರ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಜಾನಪದ ಹಾಡುಗಳನ್ನು ಹಾಡುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಭಾಷೆಯ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಗೂ ಶ್ರಮಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಚುಟುಕು ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಸಮ್ಮೇಳನ, ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲಾ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಪರಿಷತ್ ಸಹಿತ ಅನೇಕ ಕನ್ನಡ, ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಸಂಘಟನೆಗಳು ಏರ್ಪಡಿಸಿದ್ದ ಕವಿಗೋಷ್ಠಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿದ್ದರು. 2010ನೆ ಸಾಲಿನ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಬ್ಯಾರಿ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಅಕಾಡಮಿಯ ಗೌರವ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ, ವೀರರಾಣಿ ಅಬ್ಬಕ್ಕ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಸಹಿತ ಅನೇಕ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಅವರು ಭಾಜನರಾಗಿದ್ದರು.

ಮೊದಲ ಪತ್ನಿ ನಿಧನರಾದ ಬಳಿಕ ಅವರು ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಮದುವೆಯಾದರು. ಹೀಗೆ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಪತ್ನಿಯರಲ್ಲಿ 6 ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಮತ್ತು ಐದು ಮಂದಿ ಗಂಡು ಮಕ್ಕಳಿದ್ದರು. 2019ರ ಡಿಸೆಂಬರ್ 24ರಂದು ಮುಹಮ್ಮದ್ ಮಾರಿಪಳ್ಳ ನಿಧನರಾದರು.
