Ayurvedic physician Pandit Hammabba Ullal, fondly known as “Pandit Ammuvaka,” was a revered figure in the field of traditional medicine in Ullal. His deep-rooted belief in fostering a healthy society, free from caste discrimination, earned him widespread acclaim as a beacon of hope for the impoverished masses.
Born in 1900 to Pandit Khulam and Mariamma of Ullal, Hammabba inherited the noble profession of medicine from his father and embarked on a lifelong journey of healing after completing his seventh standard education. Despite facing financial hardships, he remained steadfast in his commitment to serving the underprivileged, prioritizing public welfare over personal gain.
Pandit Hammabba’s expertise in Ayurveda attracted thousands of patients, ranging from young children to the elderly. Utilizing natural remedies like turmeric, he successfully treated ailments such as jaundice, snakebites, and scarlet fever. His tireless dedication to easing the suffering of others knew no bounds, as he tirelessly attended to patients day and night, bringing comfort and relief to their lives.
Blessed with two wives and a large family of six sons and two daughters, Pandit Hammabba nurtured a legacy of medical excellence. Encouraging two of his sons, Pandit Ibrahim and Pandit Muhammad, to follow in his footsteps, he paved the way for future generations to continue his noble work. Today, his grandchildren, Dr. Asif and Dr. Zanuddin, carry forward his legacy in the medical field, upholding his commitment to compassionate care and service.
Despite his passing on September 12, 1984, Pandit Hammabba’s legacy of social service and healing endures, leaving an indelible mark on the community he served with unwavering dedication until his final days.
