A Transformative Figure in Film Journalism
Late Mr. Rauf Ahmed, a veteran film journalist, was a towering figure in the Beary community, staying in Mumbai. Born to Late Mrs. Amina and Late Mr. Abdur Rahim Ahmed, a respected judge within the former Madras Presidency, he is the elder brother of Mr. Iqbal Ahmed, a renowned educationist based in Bengaluru.
Graduating from Government College, Mangaluru, Rauf Ahmed further honed his skills at the prestigious Bhavans College of Journalism, Mumbai, where he excelled as a gold medalist. His journey in journalism began at the Free Press Journal, laying the foundation for an illustrious career.
In 1975, he joined the Times of India in Mumbai, working alongside notable contemporaries like M J Akbar. His passion for film journalism led to the launch of successful magazines such as “Super” and “Movie.” However, it was his tenure as the editor of “Filmfare” that marked his meteoric rise in the field.
Under Rauf Ahmed’s editorial leadership, “Filmfare” underwent a transformative journey. He shifted the magazine’s focus from industry gossip to insightful articles and innovative design. Vintage music, parallel cinema, and nostalgic reflections found a prominent place, elevating “Filmfare” to the pinnacle of film journalism.
During his six-year tenure, the Filmfare Awards were reformed, aligning them with international standards and introducing changes such as venue alterations. His editorial prowess extended beyond film journalism, evident during his time at Saturday Times, where he pioneered the introduction of color printing.
Despite exploring various journalistic domains, film journalism remained his enduring passion. In 2016, he published “Shammi Kapoor – The Game Changer,” a book detailing the iconic actor’s profound impact on Hindi cinema.
Rauf Ahmed’s wonderful writing style and artistic magazine designs captured readers’ attention. He worked with many superstars, including Amitabh Bachchan, and was recognized for his transformative contributions to film journalism.
Throughout his career, Mr. Rauf Ahmed emerged as a game changer in Indian film journalism, leaving an indelible mark on the industry. His legacy lives on, even as he peacefully passed away on February 5th, 2023, in Mumbai. He is survived by his wife, son, and a daughter.
