Sulaiman Ammad Kapu Mallar

1944 – 2013

Sulaiman Ammad Beary, born on February 19, 1944, to Ammad Beary and Bibi in Mallar near Kapu in Udupi district, emerged as a torchbearer for the Beary community, particularly in Mumbai, where he made significant contributions.

At a young age, Sulaiman ventured to Mumbai in pursuit of employment opportunities. Initially finding work in a textbook shop in the bustling Bazaar Gate area, he soon showcased his literary talents by writing stories and poems. His creativity found expression in various avenues, including contributing personal introductions of movie stars to newspapers and engaging in journalism.

Residing in Mahim, a suburb of Mumbai, Sulaiman established his own printing press, aptly named Mallar Printing Press. Through his press, he endeavored to promote literature in diverse languages, including Kannada, Hindi, Marathi, Urdu, Gujarati, and Tulu. His efforts were widely appreciated by Kannada Sangha organizations in Mumbai, earning him admiration and respect within the community.

Sulaiman’s commitment to the Beary community was further exemplified through his dedicated service as the Honorary General Secretary of Mumbai’s sole Beary organization, the “Shafi Vector Association Mumbai,” for an impressive 25 consecutive years. His tireless advocacy for Kannada language and culture garnered recognition from esteemed institutions such as Geetambika Temple Asalpha Ghatikopar, Shaniswara Mandir Navi Mumbai Nerul, Gurukula Mumbai, and Kannada Seva Sangh Powai.

A staunch admirer of Kannada, Sulaiman’s passion for the language was evident throughout his life. He was survived by his wife Fatima and two sons, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication to the Beary community and the promotion of Kannada culture. Sulaiman Ammad Beary’s contributions continue to be remembered and cherished by those whose lives he touched, even after his passing in 2013.
